I was wondering:

Is it possible to create a ship component that will give research/intelligence points?

Similar to the research lab ship component from MOO 2 if anyone remembers that?

Anyone know how to do something like this?

Invader, we tried this early on when the game came out and others have tried this every now and then. The short answer is no. You can put the abilities on a new component and get it on a ship, but they will not accumulate points b/c of the way it is hard-coded. The P & N mod crew might have found a way around this though. . .

The P&N mod "crew" is just one me.
To answer the question:

Ship based research = Boarding Parties + SpaceYard

Ship based intel = N/A
(If you don't have planets, you don't have political contact with aliens, and thus you cannot harm or be harmed by intel ops)

Thanks...Though Im not sure I understand how the P&N crew mod works...or how you get rp out of boarding parties & a spaceyard... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

He is being funny. He means pirates and nomads don't do research themselves. Instead, they steal (extract) it from captured (liberated) ships.

"or how you get rp out of boarding parties & a spaceyard..."

Board the ship, capture it, take it to a shipyard and use the analyze function. You gain at technology if the ship is more advanced than what you have
