What's the deal with the X and checkmark.

So what's up with the X and the checkmark that are suppose to show me there are new Messages posted in a thread? they seem to have no realation to the threads I've view or Messages I've read.

They show the threads that have added Messages since the Last time you logged in on the site. Whether you've actually read that thread isn't relevant.
