I don't use troops & ground combat much (I prefer to glass the planet), How do you land (drop) the troops ?. I have 2 large transports orbiting a planet and can't get the troops on the surface to start the ground combat sequence. What did I forget ?

There's a "drop troops" command- try that http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Do the transports have to be "Troop Transports" to get the Drop Troops order to engage ?

No.

If you're running in Strategic combat, they MUST have their primary orders set to "drop troops" though.

How do you set the primary orders for an individual "ship"? I know how to set the orders for a fleet, but not for the individual ships in that fleet. Thanks for your assistance.

Click the 'stats/strategy' button while viewing the class of ship that you want to change and you'll see the components display replaced with the constructed/lost/scrapped (upgraded) statistics and the strategy. Click the 'arrow' next to the strategy and you can choose a new strategy from the list.

Yes, you have to choose a strategy for an entire class at once. You can't set an individual ship's strategy differently from its class.

Unless you put each ship that you want to differ from the norm into its own fleet, and then use the fleet's strategy. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

You might want to create your own custom strategy so you can be sure the troop transport is going to get to the planet. Something which emphasises taking out seekers, which have dusted dozens of my transports before I even get started on the ground combat part.

Run it in the simulator until it works right. And, always plan for more than you think might be kicking around. You don't want to pack your transports with troops if that class is going to have a high fatality rate, but you should have enough to make a dent on the ground forces you encounter.

Using the Intel pproject 'Covert Recon' will tell you what is on a planet (cargo, i.e. weapons platforms and troops) before you attack, but things can change between the time of the report and the time of action.
