Newest Version of GOLD, running Derek's mod. I had auto turn set to every turn. A couple of turns into the game (simultatious move) the turn processing getts real slow. I give up on the game. Later I find my computer has to think for a good while to open the SEIV directory w/ explorer. I find that the porblem is that I have 19,000+ files in my savegame folder taking up 132 meg! They all appear to be from this same game. I destroyed the evidence (deleted them all) to free up all that wasted space. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

No.
See if you can recreate the problem. If you dare... Also scan for melissa with the latest virus software ....
you should have 1 file with *.pl001 or something
a *.gam
and the text files for stats and the combat file ( am i missing anything ??)

Do a search of the forums. I remember someone else having a problem like this. I do not know if they ever found the cause.
Edit: Here it is:

Problem attributed to a debugging Version of a windows library on win2k. Reinstallation of Win2k sp2 fixed the problem.

I just did a search again and it showed up in the search (search for: thousands files) But when I click on the links returned by the search I get topics not found. *shrug* I dunno what is wrong.

Apparently the search engine is still pointing to it's old location for some reason.

Hmm... That's exactly what I saw. Now I know what the problem is.
