View Full Version : Why Is It
Atrocities

Why is it that everyone else can upload new avatars, but whenever I try, they won't take?
I upload the image, 48 x 48, to shrapnel, get the url, and put it on the place it goes and click "Set Avatar". I select my avatar, and then save the changes to my profile. However each time, my new avatar will not stick. What am I doing wrong?

Well, the thing I always seem to screw up (I've done it every time I changed my avatar) is paste the entire URL link that I got when uploading the image file. Example..
</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">123456789.gif (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newuploads/123456789.gif)</pre><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">This is incorrect. What you need to paste in for the link to the avatar is just...
</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newuploads/123456789.gif</pre><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">See the difference? That gets me everytime.
If that's not it I have no idea what the problem is for you.

Also make sure to hit the "select this avatar" button or nothing will happen.
Also, some websites like tripod or geocities, etc...don't allow remote linking for images...

Ok, first of all I think you have to use the .gif. I don't think it will let you use .jpg for an avatar.
Click "my profile"
Click "View/update profile"
Click "select a different avatar image"
paste your link in the Use Custom URL window
For this avatar http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newuploads/1025221949.gif I used...
</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newuploads/1025221949.gif</pre><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">click "Set URL"
click "Select this Avatar"
click "Update Profile"
Go back to the forum and make a post. You might not see it till your next post.

Edit: apparently you can use the .jpg, cause I see Gandalph got it to work. Hehe, looks like you are going to be the only one without that Avatar AZtrocities. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Can you use a .bmp file as avatar picture?
I don't know how convert it to a .gif file and although I can upload and define the .bmp file as avatar it just will not remain there after I hit the update profile buttom.

Now I tried the .jpg file and this apperently works in contrast to the .bmp file.

First of all open your .bmp image into whatever image editor you have, then go to Save As, then name it, and select the save as type to .gif, or ,jpg or whatever you're wanting to convert it to. It's simple as that, hope that helps for future use.

Thank you Ragnarok for your answer.
Unfurtunately that is exactely what I don't have in my (quite old) Adobe photoshop software: the ability to store it as a .gif file.

But you can save it as .jpg file even in oldest Photoshop. Then, rename it as .gif in Windows. Believe it or not, it will become _almost_ genuine .gif file !

Even MS Paint- which comes with Windows- can convert to .gif files..
