I have finally decided to start work on my new mod, ideas for which I have been gathering for quite some time, and I have a question about fighter supply. Do they refill their supplies while on a carrier, sharing the carrier's supplies, or only with a fleet, or only on a resupply depot?

Fighters resupply by:

Go into any vessel with fighter bays, wait a turn.
Go into a planet, wait a turn.
Go to the nearest resupply depot.

Please note: In the forthcoming patch, fighters cannot LAND unless they have full movement. This lets you have 'emergency launch' in turn-based mode without being able to launch and recover multiple times in the same turn.

Also, you can mod a small supply storage bin for fighters and it works quite well. A nice way to extend their range a bit.

I am not really satisfied with the fighter supply rule as is it now.

Now, you can produce so many fighters without having a base. Carriers are just "ferries" across jump points. The fighter carrying capacity of carriers is not so important as it was in in SE3.

IMO, fighters should be handled like in SE3. They should NOT have the automatic ability to travel across the system space. In their basic Version they should only be "short" ranged and only usable in tactical combat.

With some advanced technology they should have the ability to travel the system space. But at the end of the same turn (or several turns) they should need to go back to base. (carrier or Planet hangar facilities)

Fighters as they are now are not really fun to play.

Change the small engines (ie small ion engine) to have "Combat Only" movement (ie afterburners). They won't have any system movement, but lots of tatical movement.

Only one component per vehicle is effective with the Combat Movement ability. So, you'd have to re-arrange the whole system of components for fighters. The engine would be several kt instead of one, and various other small components would have to be adjusted in size to account for the changed space available in fighter hulls.

What about changing the fighter engines to have a much smaller storage capacity - or make the engines use more supplies?

It may not keep them from travelling in system space, but it would keep them from going very far from a supply base or carrier.

They'd need enough supplies to fight, but perhaps some kind of happy medium could be reached?

Do fighters use supplies to move in combat or just in system travel?
