I have never acutally modified the path.txt file, I have always just tweeked the files right in the 'data' directory (after making a backup copy of it). I understand that if I tweek the components.txt I have to move the entire 'data' directory into whatever directory I designate in the path.txt file.

If I don't touch any other file outside of the 'data' directory, is the 'data' directory the only one that needs to be copied into my mod directory? If I don't mess with any files in the 'ai' folder or the 'dsgnname' folder, for example, do I just leave them in the 'space empires iv' directory?

yes and yes, i think that if se4 can't find for example the picutres in the mod dir, it will use the default pictures

For example if you change the number of racial traits, saved games and saved empires will not be compatible.
I allways like to add "savegame" and "empires" to all of my mod directories.
If you want AI to be adapted to new techs you´ll need to add the "pictures\races\racename" dirs.
