Hi,
i have SE IV standard, not gold. I built a cruiser with 1 spaceyard component to build a battlestation at a warppoint but the construction is very slow. So, i build another ship with such a component to aid the first one but i can't seem to figure out how to do that. Adding them in a fleet didn't work. Is it possible for one ship to help another in the construction of a base? Or am i going to have to build a ship with multiple space yard components on it?

None of what you suggested will work because the game will not allow it. Get used to it talking a long time. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Their only advantage is mobility ... and it barely makes up for the loss of build speed. You cannot even build a BIG ship with MANY space yard components for more speed.

Actually, a good way to do this is to build a hull with only the basic components, then design another with more components upgrade to that, then more and upgrade and so on till you have the full design. Then get a couple of repair yards in there and you will have it done in no time.
You can upgrade to infinity within a turn, I do it all the time in pirates to quickly create baseships.

Hmm, bummer.
If i would build such a basic yard and put a spaceyard on it, would it be able to repair/upgrade itself?

As long as you don't try to upgrade the space yard. It will retrofit, but that breaks the component in the process- and the space yard is what repairs things.

I think you forgot about Repair Bays. You need a SY to upgrade but a Repair Bay will repair also - in fact, level-for-level, it will repair faster. I always keep a few Repair Bays as well as SY's in my larger 'build sectors' for that reason.
As long as you have at least 1 RB or SY you'll keep repairing. Just move SY's and RB's up to the top of the repair priority lists for optimum useage.....

IIRC there was something in 1.67 that stopped upgrading or something like that, or had to do wiht upg spaceyards...
could some old fogey please clarify?

You cannot upgrade from a design without a space yard to one with a spaceyard anymore. Apparently this was viewed as a cheat. Some people would build a bunch of bases with nothing but basic control components, then upgrade them to BSY and have lots of build capacity in a very short time.
