How do y'all manage trades in PBW. What determines if the trade is a fair trade?
For tech trades, the research points arent very useful because you dont know what level of tech you are trading to the other player. How to deal with this... ?
How do I know if what they are trading to me hasnt already been researched by me?
Perhaps some PBW vets can chime in and give some hints on how to effectively trade in this game.

Whenever you are offered a trade hit reply. There is an option to look at the trade offered. If you're not sure if you've already got the tech being offered just close the windows and check your techs. Until you send the message you can always go back and check your info.

well, i generally tell people what level of tech i am offering, and ask them what they are offering in return. or tell them what level i want in return. i dont go off research points so much as i go off of what is of immediate use to me.
if you want to trade multiple levels of something, you can always click on a technology several times. for example, i can trade MINES, MINES, MINES in exchange for ARMOR, ARMOR, and i will give 3 levels of mines above what the other guy has, and i will get 2 levels of armor above what i have.
if you dont get what you are promised, two things could have happened. one, the other guy could have made a mistake, and i usually give people a chance to correct it. two, you could have been stiffed. if you get stiffed, the best thing to do is to warn the other players in the game that the other guy has lied and stolen from you. Then you send in the Navy.

I've been tricked a few times already, didn't got the levels I asked for but he got my techs!
Could MM just make the tech trade more clearly?
like:
mines lv2, mines lv3
for your
armor lv4, armor lv5 and armor lv6
then everyone can make a fair trade.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That's a pretty good idea. It might have some holes in it. Like what if they offer you level 5 and you are only on level 2, that sort of thing. BUt they could probably be worked out.
Deceipt and treachery in some instances are part of the game. You always have the ability to exact your revenge. in SEIV, you don't have to take them to court, you can take the law into your own hands. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
The biggest problem with the current system though IMHO is you could completely inadvertantly screw somebody because they already have an equal level of the tech to you they will get no use from the trade. It could be an honest mistake, but it doesn't make them any happier about it.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">If in that case, you just got level 3 of that tech. You should told the true to trade partner and you KNOW what you have.
If you want lv5 of that tech, you should ask for lv 3,4 & 5.
Could Modding can fix this kinda problem?

No, unless you make each level of a tech area into a separate tech area. IMHO, That is more work than it is worth.

Not to mention hellishly cluttered.. I suppose you could always switch the Alpha Centari style system (there are only 4 tech areas there, it's different levels in each that give the various stuff)
