...to make a weapon with the "Component is destroyed on use" ability? Will it actually be destroyed on use, and will the strategic combat AI actually use it in combat like any other weapon?

I am looking for a true one shot weapon. Not one that simply can only fire once per combat round, but must actually be repaired between combats.

Has anyone ever tried the destroyed on use ability on other components that normally function automatically? What about repair bays? A tiny repair component that can repair one other component, but that is destroyed itself when used?

The term "Use" as seen in "Destroyed on Use" refers to the "Use Order" as seen on the command button panel.
Firing a weapon is not "Use"ing the weapon, moving your ship is not "Use"ing your engines.

"Destroyed on Use" only applies to components that are activated via the "Use" order.

if you think a bit abstractly, you can make one shot weapons. of course, star destroyers and planet destroyers fit into this Category.

you can also make storm creators that are one shot weapons (or multishot..)

right now all storms are the same size, and a storm creator makes a random sized storm. you could make storms of different sizes, and storm creators that make storms of a certain size. then you make a specific size storm that obscures sensors, or does 10,000 points of damage to ships passing by, or whatever.

Ok, that's kind of what I thought. Thanks for the confirmation.

I don't think you can create storms of a specific size... what ability would you use to do it with? Create Storm? OK, then, what Value 1 would you pass to it? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

hmm, you are probably right. maybe you can only call specific sizes in the system types file.
