Why is it that so many newbies have that eclipse icon as their avatar? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif is it really that attractive?

It was the first one I saw that didn't look totally ridiculous, or didn't look like cheap clip-art from Freelance Graphics.
That is, except for the one YOU chose, of course, and I didn't want to be a copy-cat. ;-)

Well, actually, after I chose my avatar I found that someone called "Nebraskan" already had it... but I didn't want to change 'cause I liked the picture and there weren't very many good ones available anyway!

Yawn...I quite fancy these colorful red and blue stripes...

Hmph!
It is not an eclipse. It is The (black) Eye of Sauron. So there.

Kimball, the easiest way to add your own avatar is to upload your graphic to Shrapnel's server.
1)goto New Scenario/Mod forum
2)enter to a topic thread
3)hit post reply
4)click on Upload File Form ( to left of type in area)
5)Browse or enter address of picture file you want(Gif or jpg)
6) click on upload button
once you have uploaded your file, you will get a message with a file path and number that represents your file.
Use this path and number in the avatar URL area of your profile.
Viola! You have a custom Avatar! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
P.S. Mine is an animated Gif. Ain't I a handsome devil! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Yeah, I am finding that out. I have been working on it for that Last 10 minutes or so using the process Taz suggested. I go through the steps to upload, copy the link, go to my profile, pasted the link and there it is. I update my profile and it disappears, as you can see. Any other suggestions. I have a pretty cool one that the folks here can relate to.

Some times the new custom avatars do not stick.

Is there any other way to upload an Avatar image besides what Taz suggested?

You can have the image somewhere else on the internet and then set the URL to that image location. Somebody has said that they would host such images.
BTW, what DIMENSIONS is the image? An avatar is 48 by 48 pixels. Also check file SIZE. I don't know what limits the system is set to allow for a valid avatar. Perhaps this is what is keeping some pictures from being used. Also I heard that BMP's will not work.
