View Full Version : Design Names Text File

I have an excellent set of Adunaic names I want to insert as a design names file. Can someone talk me through how I do this.

Also, under the TDM modpack, the Romulan design file seems to be awry. When you play them in a game, you just get their ships called "Design 48 002" or something like that

Any ideas?

Look in the Pictures/Races/Romulan folder. Along with aaaaaaaall those pictures is probably a file called "romulan.txt" or some such. Open it and see if it is a list of ship names. If so, move it into the designnames folder. The romulans will then have romulan sounding design names.

PS. What's "Adunaic" mean?

I am sure a real Tolkien fan will tell me I am wrong but Adunaic was the vernacular language of the Numenoreans.

I think it is a great sounding language and well cool for SEIVG

Dumbluck, thanks for sorting the Romulans, how do I set up a new design names text file?

heh. I can't answer that one. I think it's just a .txt file with the list of names in it. I also think that you need that line of equal signs above and below it. But I don't know for sure. Your best bet would be to make a copy of a .txt file and replace the old names with your new names. Give the edited file an original name. I know you can pick the design name file when you create an .emp file, but I don't know how else to determine which design name file the shipset AI would use...

GrowlTigga,

It is, as Alpha pointed out, just a txt file that you create. A simple list of names placed in the correct directory (which I forget at the moment). I use a list of Italian wines, and wine growing regions for mine.

Cheers!

Trajan, you hedonistic viticulturalist you

I can just see your star armada coming toward me, cower with terror as the "Pouilly Fouse" class cruisers hove into view, cringe with fear as the majestic 'Chateauneuf du pape' class battlecruisers move toward you, tremble in fright at the awesome power of the "Pinot Grigio" class battleships and **** bricks as the mighty "Blue Nun" class dreadnoughts loom above you..

<LOL>

I don't actually use Blue Nun, opting instead for the Barolo class Dreadnoughts, the Tuscany class battleships, and the Sangiovese class light cruisers among others.

But I can think of at least a few instances when a Blue Nun class Dreadnought might strike fear into the hearts of men and alien alike. As a matter of fact, I think my 2nd grade teacher was a Blue Nun Dreadnought. At the least, it sure felt like it when she was wacking my knuckles.

The Romulans have been updated as have all the races for Star Trek. Just an FYI.

You can view and download them from New Age Shipyards. The link is in my signature.

Actually, you just need to make a list of names, one per line in a text file (you can use notepad for this) and save it in the "Dsgnname" folder. If you are using the TDM-ModPack mod, that folder would be located in the "TDM-ModPack" folder. There should be nothing in the text file except for the list of names.

This thread inspired me to create a design names text file! So instead of designing one, I stole one from a website! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Actually, this website had gathered a ton of shipnames from Iain Banks Culture series, and I just copies them and sorted them. About 15 minutes of actual work for me! You can find it in the mod forum!

Yay! I contributed!

Trajan, I personally think you should extend your range of wines to include some of the champagnes and champagne bois'

Think of how impressed all us closet sophisticates will be when you field fleets full of 'Mumms Cordon Rouge' class destroyers, 'Vivre Cliquot Ponsardin' class cruisers, 'Napa Valley Sparkling Chardonnay' class carriers launching wings of 'Syndney Old Wallamalloo Regurgitator' fighters...

Maybe we should start a race of aliens fielding 'canapes' designated ships, I can see the 'prawn vol au vent' class battlecruiser coming into view, closely followed by the 'scampi in a basket' class baseship...

Ooooh, I am trembling in fear (and getting hungry and thirsty)...

AK - there is a gay lap dancing club in north Manchester that apparently needs pole dancers? I could put your name forward if you would like

While the "I blame your mother" class destroyers open fire from the flanks, raking the enemy battle line with missile fire...
Demoralized, the enemy fleet turns to retreat, only to find that their retreat is cut off by a squadron of "Don't let the name fool you" class Light Cruisers...

LOL, Sachmo, we could take this one step forward and design an alien race that designates it's vessels after things your wife says to you..

Cue orchestral fanfare as the mighty battlefleet of the Nagan-Moan Alliance warps into normal space. Squadrons of 'Ooh, you've left the loo seat up again' destroyers sweep on the flanks, serried ranks of 'That bin wont go out on its own' light cruisers and 'Why am I the only one who unstacks the dishwasher' class cruisers form the bulk of the fleet and the mighty 'You dont appreciate me' class battlecruisers are only dwarfed by the fleet flagship, a powerful 'I should have listened to my mother' class dreadnought

Actually, the names I used were actual ship names from the Cultures series, and are in the design name file that I uploaded. Last night I was messing around with it, and more than once I laughed out loud at the names that came up. The "Irresistable Object" Class Escort, and the "Nasty Brutal and Short" Class Destroyers had me wetting myself!

Tigga,

The idea of naming ships using phrases such as comments by the wife or other inane statements is very enticing.

I also love the idea of using Gourmet recipes as the name for classes of ships. The Prime Rib of Beef class of Dreadnoughts immediately comes to mind.

Hmmmmmmmmm........

When my wife lets me play the game again, next Tuesday at the earliest http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif ((((, I will most assuredly use a newer naming scheme.

Cheers!

Trajan, dont let the side down by insinuating that you are anything less than a gourmand!

Prime rib of beef my arse, I would expect you to be fielding 'Fillet Steak Morroccan with rosemary jus, shallot julienne, served on a bed of jewelled couscous with a thia spiced tzatziki, cracked szechuan peppers and a glass of ice cold Chateau De Routon Chablis" class light cruisers (2nd refit)

I will, unfortunately, have to wait until tomorrow to get the names together for an appropriate list. The job is kicking my Old Dead Roman Emperor arse right about now.

Stay tuned...I will post an appropriate menu...erm..I mean ship name list.

Cheers!

GT, where did you get that Adunaic names file? Was it the one I had uploaded a while ago?

Growltigga
August 8th, 2002, 11:04 PM
Fyron, it was one I downloaded from the Tolkien Society (of which I am a proud member and which I am proud to announce, now the current Mrs GT has gone to bed, myself and the various male members of my clan are about to go and watch my new 'Lord of the Rings' DVD on my new wide screen B&O TV)

I saw the one you did early on, I thought that is where you had got it from too

I've recently been working on a "A Bit Crap, Really" names file. The idea is that once you've gotten so ggod at the game that winning against other humans is no longer a challenge, you use the "Crap" names files in order to humiliate them. For example, your enemy's emabarrassment would be compounded if they were defeated by a fleet of "Duct Tape & Superglue" class destroyers, or a "Critical Design Flaw" Baseship.

Other names include
"Could Do Better"
"Worryingly Sticky"
"Significant Safety Issues"

Full list will be posted to my website upn completion...

Handy tip #2164351/c:
Make your ship name lists in Excel, one name per row. This makes it easy to count and sort your ships names. When you've finished making the list, just highlight them all and copy/ paste into notepad.

Love the Culture name file (coz I love the Culture novels) but there are a few "accidental" entries in there. For example I think "From Look to Windward", "Affront ships" and "Zetetic Elench Ships" are actually comments from the website about the list rather than the names of ships. But I haven't read all the books so I can't be sure=-) There are probably a few others like that in there too.

For those Brits posting who read "Viz", I am working on a "Roger's Profannisaurus" design names file which I wil be happy to share on a no-liability basis. All credit will be given to Viz for this endeavour.

As El Scoffo said, the primary purpose of this file is to have silly names for your vessels which will humiliate your opponents.. that being said.. initial trials have been wonderful and personally, the sight of squadrons of "Lucky Pierre" class cruisers, "Sailing up the Windward Passage" class destroyers and "Ragman's Coat" class fleet carriers is just a joy to me

Dogscoff, yes there is but unfortuneately my firewall stops me viewing that awful mucky stuff at work...

I might even try and do a 'Profanisaur' Mod, watch out for the 'felch' beam, duck as 'hairy coconut' missiles fly over your head
