I am playing a un-modified game (latest vers), what can I use to take out fighters? Other then ships main direct fire weapons or other fighters.

How many are "lots"? I let the AI run a high technology race (in the demo, so not really all that high :-) for a while, and I didn't see it design any ships with more than one PDC. So, I was assuming that more than one wouldn't do any good, until I came to this board.
How many PDCs would you typically put in, say, a light cruiser, if you knew you were going up against a fighter race? It's a judgment call, I know, but what's the right ballpark?

The default AIs aren't very good. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
3 or 4 PDCs per ship can be effective. Also, special Point-Defense ships are also useful. Give them 1 weapon, and the rest PDCs. They can destroy lots of fighters. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Phased Polarians are good against Shield fighters as the base game does not have Phased Shields for Units.

The shield points of fighters are treated as structure points for the purposes of damage caluclation, and a fighter is not degraded untill all it's sturture points are gone, at which point it is destroyed.
