If a ship is filled with missiles what is the strategy after "Optimimum Range"? Will the ship automagically move out of range and then back again on the 3rd turn? Can that be set?

It is best to set them to "Maximum Weapons Range". Optimal won't work very well. Ships in strategic combat tend to move then fire, or fire then move. They don't move, fire, move.

Set your max range to primary strat=max range, then secondary strat=dont' get hurt, works much better IMHO,

Or have the secondary set to Ram. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I only build ships for ramming. Thats it, my complete and entire stratigy for victory.

At least, that is what should happen.

Ah...so http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

It is tailored made to the opponent's particular characteristics (in this case his "faster speed"). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I thought you were joking about ramming ships, but I did some tests Last night and it's a rather interesting strategy. Essentially, 3 ramming BC's with about 30 small fighters in support can take out a very heavily shielded PPB dreadnaught with ease. 30 BC vs 10 dreads left me with about 15 BC's remaining.

Very interesting indeed, if not expensive.

Take Organic. Build BCs that have the essentials, Solar Sails, ECM, and the rest Organic Armor III. Those can ram a few ships, regenerate, ram a few ships, regenerate, repeat. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

My question with ramming is does your ship take equal damage to the damage you are dealing out?

My question with ramming is does your ship take equal damage to the damage you are dealing out? <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No. There are two entries in Settings.txt:

Ram Ship Source Modifier Percent := 60
Ram Ship Target Modifier Percent := 100

I haven't experimented with it enough to interpret how that's applied, though.

[ Edit ] A search turned up this old thread {link} (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=002577;p=1), in which Suicide Junkie reported that the damage done is (remaining hit points*settings modifier)+warhead damage.

Ok, so it seems like your ship takes 60% of the damage you can deal and the enemy takes 100% so if you have a 200 dmg warhead thats 200 dmg for them and only 120 for you. That's a pretty good tradeoff, especially if you up your defenses. The problem would be doing this against the relgious talisman, but if you could out number them due to your lower cost ships and lower maintenance costs, it's a good possibility, especially if you could catch them on warps so there's less distance for your rammers to travel before they hit.

so if you have a 200 dmg warhead thats 200 dmg for them and only 120 for you. <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No, the damage the other ship does is a function of its size; the size of your ship's warhead doesn't affect how much damage you take.

I don't understand, can you give me an example of what you mean?

The target ship's warheads (if any) do not do any damage.

I refitted to include a weapon, but haven't had a chance to try it yet. Does it need a weapon or did I do something else wrong?

Did you set it to Ramming strategy? Maybe it is Kamikaze Attack or something. It should work though.

Yes, the strategy title is Ram, and the movement strategies are ram/ram. Everything else is kind of maximized. Break formation, attack any and all targets (except planets). I don't like to limit my ships too much.
