if you build a sphereworld or ringworld around an unstable star, does that help prevent the star from going 'nova? My home systems star is unstable and i don't want it to blow up just yet ... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Yes, it does. Building a ring- or sphereworld essentially removes the star that was in the system.

Before starting the game, open up events.txt and find the "star blows up event" in the list. Then delete it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

FYI the actual unstable star description does nothing.

I mean the unstable description does nothing at all, ignore it completely. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif such a star has the same chance to go as a normal star with no message.

thanks for the answers. anyway, i'll start to build space yard ships when i get some more resources and after the initial expand fase.
when a star explodes, is everything in that system destroyed?

When you get this message, I kinda tried it out, did some sloppy math and found that I would have to have a pre-buildt space yard ship with Space Yard III, move it to the star that turn, and begin constructing a base with the ringworld component that turn. 1.7 years before completion, emergency has to be turned on. Or else it wouldn't be ready in time.
Of course the other components would also be needed, but they don't take as long to build.
Just to save face here, I'll add a YMMV.

The planets are turned into asteroids, if they had moons, multiple asteroid fields at the same spot. The system description remains the same as it was, however.
Now, you are listening to Phoenix-D right? The little text blurb associated with your star doesn't mean it's more likely to go nova, only if your scientists report it.
You're not fooling me, you're not worried about the star, you just wanna build a sphereworld 'cause it's a http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif thing to have.

Has anyone tried creating stars over a currently existing ring/sphereworld and building yet another massive planetary structure? It seems like a neat thing to do (and you'd have the weapon platforms of one ringworld protecting the other!). I would _think_ it would open yourself to someone making the new star nova before the world is built, but technically they can do that from the warp point anyway if they bring their own star creator.

I never thought of creating a star just to destroy the system. You could do that at the warp point or inside a storm, and they'd never see it coming.
I gotta make those system shield facilities a priority

You can only destroy a star if your star destroyer is in the same sector as the star. Can't do it from the warp-point.
I thought that the 'star-unstable' ability gave a set probability that that star would start going nova each round. Are you telling me that it actually does squat? Or are you refering to the descriptive text of the star?

Ring- and sphereworlds count as both a star, and not a star.
They count as not-a-star for purposes of planet building, solar panels, and star destroyers.
They count as a star for purposes of building new stars (ie: you can't).
The only way to kill a Ringworld would be a modded "super planetbuster" component, or, maybe a black hole
You can only destroy a star if your star destroyer is in the same sector as the star. Can't do it from the warp-point.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I believe he was suggesting that you create the star at the warppoint, and blow it up from there.
If you timed your orders right, you could create a warppoint, warp in, create a star, and blow it up, and then close the warppoint in one turn.

Who says you have to create a warp point? Star destroyers are expensive enough as it is.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That's right; the only thing that ability does is cause that description to be displayed. It's one of several unimplemented features that are scattered through the data files.

SEIV will not allow you create a star in a system that already have a star or artificial planet. Otherwise crystalline races could pull this trick: build 100+ stars in system and use Solar plants on all planets to get megabugs !

Busted! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif i just thought it would make a nice addition to my home system so i could show it off to some other races (*) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
