Long story short, you don't want to ...

Long story begins ...

The robominers, robofarmers, and roboradextractors - hereafter called miners will give you resources without you having to colonize a planet.

You use them when you can't colonize the source 'cause the planet type can't be colonized by you, or because the source is an asteroid field.

You have to get them there though. You can put them on a large sattelite, the downside is it will take you a while to research large sattelites.

You can put them on a ship, but your ship is made of minerals, and it will take more than a few miners crammed on a ship to break even on maintenance. Only one ship can mine one spot.

You could put them on a base, which has less maintenance. But you'll have to build it there, bases can't move.

They only work where you don't have a colony, so you could build the base at a planet that has a moon and mine the moon only, for example.

The robo-miners also decrease the value of what they're mining a little at a time.

There are mods that can change this. Otherwise, not very usefull

Arkcon - Sorrry, gotta disagree on this one.

MacReady - Here is a link where this has been discussed before ->LINK (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=005245#000004)

I currently have a base with 8 RM III's, 3 RR I's, and 2 RF I's sitting on an asteroid valued at 216%, 216%, 213% respectively. It is producing 14kt ore, 2.5 kt org, and 3.8kt rad. Maintenance costs are 1540 ore, 81 org, 262 rad. As you can see it is quite profitable.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Recently in a TDM game I set up shop in two asteroid field sectors. I sent a constructor ship with sat layers. Dropped a large miner sat, rad sat, and the occasional farm sat at each spot, topped off with a small sat with stealth armor.

I wasn't really rolling in resources, but I went MEE, and the free resources was kinda nice, kept paying the maintenance bills until I could capture some nice worlds.

I wouldn't want to base my economy on it though

EDIT - especially with Fyron's Quad Mod!

Sometimes it's fun to set up a remote resourcer in orbit over a planet with two moons - you harvest from all three at once...mega resources!

Do the same thing with Fyron's Quad Mod, main planet and 6 moons - WooHoo!!

I join with the chorus of very useful and get them up asap. However - make sure that you have storage facilities built to handle any surplus.

i do not use them since the ai doesn't use them so i rule out "unfair" competition. has anybody seen the ai (TDM) build remote mining sats?
