I've played Imperium Galactica quite some times and it really a cool game once you get the hang of it. One of the coolest features from the game were those small movies every time you selected a unit or building. Fantastic! Can something like that be done in SE IV: Gold (or SE IV Regular)?

Timstone,
Not yet and probably not ever. Based on writings in other threads it seems most folks wold rather Arron work on other features than graphics.

Hmm... too bad. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
I was hoping for a yes and a thankyou-for-a-great-idea, but that won't be the case now I understand. Again, too bad.

Timstone,
As you get further into the game and look at the list of hopes for SE V, you will realize

Timstone ... lots of stuff gets panned promptly and then re-evaluated in another way. But cooler graphics and animation generally lose. We'll see what SE5 can do.

I sure hope we hear anything soon from Malfador about SE V. I don't care for Dungeon Odessy much (is that slander?), but I can't wait for the new installment of SE.

Sometimes, I get a little bored with playing the AI but, the game isn't dull for me yet.

Arkcon ,
That line is from the book, "The Lord of the Rings" by JRR Tolkien. Not the movie by ...
It is in the first part of the poem, "The Riddle of Strider".
I've been quoting it since I first read the book at age 13.
The full poem is here at my web site:
http://www.windingstream.com/favoritepoems.html#RiddleStrider
where it was long befor I knew of this BBS.
(yes I'm being a bit defensive).

I'd have to echo Arkcon's comment -- I have generally played only single player vs. TDM AI. I just opened up a huge can of worms for myself by starting my first single-player game of Porportions a couple of weeks ago. The number of mods in the universe is just staggering, and I haven't even scratched the surface. If only I were independently wealthy and could devote myself 24 x 7 to SE....

I got a friend hooked on the demo, and he got a friend hooked, and his wife uninstalled it, something about him not doing any chores and skipping two classes one day http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

I play 4X games to think about strategy, not see cute little movies repeated over and over and over and... ad nauseum. And even with a 40 Gb disk I prefer my data space be used for code that does something rather than a zillion little movies that are only interesting once and then become a waste. I'll watch the 'diplomatic animations' in MOO 3 exactly once, then turn them off. Maybe I can then get away with deleting them? Some very small touches, like animated features moving on the faces of stars and planets in the information screen image, would probably enhance the game. More than that is not for 4X games.

I had some colonizaton game for my old PC, made by Sierra, was it called Outpost? At any rate, I had a better PC than the game said it needed. (I did get the copy from the CompUSA bargin bin after all) But it would still hang on some animations. Sheesh.
Now a friend dredged up a copy of Star Control 2, and the gas giants swirl around. So I said cool. Then Uranus seemd to look odd, it was swirling with the correct axial tilt! That was an impressive surprise.

I don't know if he meant a position change from turn to turn or if he meant real time. At any rate, it proved to be too difficult to code for someting that was also too processor intensive. We'll see.

I hyope it will be entirelly 3D, that would very cool. Maybe even forces a breakthrough in turnbases startegy. Maybe the masses will come to like these sort of games. That can be both good and bad.
Good: More publicity, more willingness from publishers to publish these sort of games.
Bad: A too big community, no more cool forums like this one.

I wouldn't mind little rotating animated bitmaps for planets...but that would add a lot more MBs for pics.
In SE:V, I would like to see a 3D galaxy with 2D systems and orbiting planets. It wouldn't have to necessarily be a coordinate system, you could have each planet move one-square around the star per month - that would be an easy way to work it in - since each planet is at a specified "ring" distance anyway (look at systemtypes.txt). I'm thinking it could still be done for SE:IV now!

Then go to Veiw/Update profile. Then scroll down till you see "Avatar Image" on the left side. Then click the blue link that says "Select a different Avatar Image". you can pick either the ones that are shown. (a few pages of them) or put your own on there. To do that just fill in the URL that you're using to host your image. If you don't have server space just upload to the Shrapnel server and pull from there. That should do it.

The upload form only appears when you are posting in the upload forum.
Click "Intel Forums", and check out the first forums listed there.
Pick a thread in that upload forum, and "post reply"
On the left, where it currently says "Uploading not allowed in this forum" to me, you will see "View Upload Form" or some such link.
Click that, and you can upload a file. Take careful note of the name it gives you, since the name will be a many digit number, and there is no way to recover that number if you forget it.
