View Full Version : Acronym Dictionary

Just now, I must have read at least 100 Messages before I understood what SDD stood for. Only then was I really able to understand what was being discussed in a very complex discussion.

So, I propose we start a Acronym Dictionary. I have started with a few that come to mind (including SDD http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ). There must be dozens, if not hundreds more.

I think the format is pretty self-explanatory. Any improvements are welcomed.

Feel free to enter any acroyms you know of. Or if you do not know the meaning of one, post it, as I am sure someone will know what it stands for.

You should just add the initails of every component/facility ect; they're all likely to be used as aconyms unless there are repetitions.

I usually refer to a Self Destruct Device as SSD for some reason. Maybe for "Ship Self Destruct"... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Some weapons and such don't get refered to as acronyms; I've never seen someone say QT for a Quantum Torpedo, for example, or any abreviation for an incinerator beam. I HAVE seen the following:

WWWWWWW
WMG- Wave-Motion Gun, weapon
WP- Warp Point (also Weapon Platform, ussually obvious by context)

HHHHH
HW- Homeworld, planet type

Phoenix-D<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Phoenix-D has brought up a very good point. There may be some disagreements on whether something is given an acronym. If the general consensus is that it doesn't, we can just remove it.

He also points out (with justification) that the same acronym can apply to two different names.

Even so, I would suggest it is still an immeasureable help to the newbie who should be able to decide to which one it applicable to (as Phoenix-D suggests from the context).

VsAI = Game played against the computer AI (ie solo human player)

P&N = Pirates & Nomads mod

SW = Star wars

ST= Star Trek

MM= Malfador Machinations

and so on...

Hmmm...

Some of the responses are interesting.... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I started this thread with the idea of dealing with Acronyms for the standard SE4 game.

So, what do I do with BOHICA? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Also, some of the Acronyms are for the "advanced" player...such as mods.

So, for the moment, I thought I would put the "non-standard" SE4 stuff into **FUN STUFF AND NOT SO FUN STUFF** and deal with it later.

The **FUN STUFF AND NOT SO FUN STUFF** will be in alphabetical order, so it should be relatively easy for the experienced player to find what he wants. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

If someone does know of a better way of doing this, I would like to hear it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

But just in case you are serious http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ...how does "Fluffy Bunny Waitress" fit in? Like, BOHICA seems to have some relevance in the sense that a player gets hit with one whammy and then... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Also, I have the highest regard for the people you mentioned. Whenever they post something, I make sure that I read it.

Yet, I am wondering if we are going off topic here. If the consensus is to include these individuals as acronyms, it can be done. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Sorry, I was being a bit facetious. you'd know all about FBWs if you ever stopped in at the cantina.

Actually, your dictionary got me thinking about an idea I had a while ago. I was considering some sort of "forum encyclopedia" in which we record all the knowledge, lore and "history" of the forum. Things we've discussed (Sweet Tea, SEIV light-speed, SEIV is like sex because...) , characters and events we've created (All the stuff that happens in the Cantina, basically), prestigious threads (ie "pirate's life" and "how old are you") and other things like that.

Not sure why anyone would do all this (other than to satisfy my own sad, obsessive vanities) but it could be a laugh.

But yeah, I'm way OT. I'll shut up now.

Heh, there's another acronym for you: OT.

OK. Shutting up...

Why stop with a Forum encyclopedia? Make it a Space Empires Encylclopedia. A complete referance with everything to newbie help and game strategy tips, to explanations of the stuff that goes on in the forum on a regular basis.

My suggestion for a name would be the Encyclopedia Malfadorica.

Here are real MM ship desginations in order of size

ES
FG (some call it a FF anyway)
DS (although everyone calls it a DD)
LC
CR
BC
BB
DN
BA (baseship)
LX (light carrier)
CX (carrier, some use CVL)
HX
SS (space station)
BS
SB (starbase)
CL (colony ship
ST, MT, LT (transports)
FS, FM, FL (fighters)
SS,SM, SL (sats)
SM, MM, LM (mines)
TS, TM, TL (troops)
WS, WM, WL (wep plats)
RS, RM, RL (drones)

O and on the Encyclopedia Malfadorica, taken right of Foundation no doubt, that sounds daunting, we recently passed the 80k mark. I think that is waht people have been trying unsuccesfully for a long time. But to categorize all the good and bad ideas, strategies, OT discussions, you're looking at a full times staff of an ENTIRE PLANET (well not really but im thinking of Terminus).

So long and please ignore my OT ramblings.

Well, I have the new listing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

It is growing like Topsy. As such, it may lose some of it's relevance unless we make a decision as to its purpose.

So, is the purpose of this dictionary is to be:
1) Common everyday usage? In this case we can turf over 20 MM acronyms.
2) Common everyday usage and MM acronyms?

I included the MM acronyms in the listing. It will be easy to remove some of them if we wish.

I didn’t include stuff like IANAL, PITA, and Star Trek/Deep Space Nine/Voyager/The Next Generation as IMHO they are peripheral acronyms and not germane to the task of providing useful and meaningful acronyms to most SE4 Users.

However, I have no intention of being heavy handed about this. If the consensus is to include one or more of the excluded items, I have no problem in doing so.

Here’s the new up-to-date listing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I very much appreciate the offer to help, although I am not sure what you are offering. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I am managing the data on a spreadsheet now.

The spreadsheet makes the data relatively easy to handle and sort.

The hard part is deciding what data is meaningful to the readers of this dictionary. For myself, I would like a dictionary of the most common Acronym usage. With this view, some of the MM definitions would be excluded.

But maybe the majority want something different. In such a case, my view should not prevail.

To determine this question, I think I am going to have to take a poll. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Question is "Can I take a poll within this thread or must I start a new thread?"

The purpose of my offer to put it in a spread sheet was for exactly what you did. A tab delimited file is a text file that most Word Processors, Spread Sheet, and Database programs can import. A separate file would be good to have for people who are reading a thread, run into a Acronym and need to bring up the list. I read the forums with a database open designed to take notes on various aspects of the game.

Most likely it is over kill.

Perhaps the Newbie Guide, Acronym
List and others should be merged into the "Encyclopedia Malfadorica”

How would it work in practice?

You also say:

I read the forums with a database open designed to take notes on various aspects of the game. <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Good idea! Never thought of it! So obvious! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

"SEX = The highly anticipated Tenth game in the Space Empires Series."

I can see this one. Someone will make a site dedicated to this tenth Version of SE and have a .org domain name. Thus it would be, "www.SE-X.org"... some idiot would then add a Y to the end of that just for kicks.

Anybody know how to do this?

The form of the poll I am considering is:

POLL
===============================
What form should the acronym dictionary take?

1) the form it now has

2) include only the most commonly used acronyms - delete acronyms not in common use such as MM's "TL = Large Troops, Hull"
================================
Any discussion on this?

Two ways to have the page open while reading the forums
1) copy and paste the data into a program you have
2) Click on a link to the page from inside the forum

The tab delimeted text file allows someone to import it to many different programs.

I don't know if anyone else uses this, but I usually refer to a Gas Giant as a GG. The G's were looking a little empty.

and of course B5 would be Babylon 5 as in the B5Mod (blatant plug) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Why not just set up a Wikipedia for SE/MM related stuff? That would get us our Encyclopaedia Malfadorica. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

If it is a bona fide mod and there is an acronym for it, we can include it in the fun stuff.
Just give it in the format we use like:

FQM = Fyron's Quadrant Mod

Edit: Is GG an acronym? Like something in everyday use?

tbontob,
Do you need this put into a spreadsheet or tab delimited file for easier manipulation?
I can help with that.

I made a list adding names from the data files.
I got 354 names, but too many repeated ancronyms, for example SS stands for:
SS = Supply Storage, Component
SS = Security Station, Component
SS = Solar Sail, Component
SS = Space Station , Hull
SS = Small Satellite , Hull

I have created a poll "What form should the acronym dictionary take"

We may get more votes and therefore a more representative sample, if we can create a link to it from this thread.

I would ask anyone who are skilled in this, to create such a link. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

Come on guys...vote!

So, far it is 2 to 3. You'll have to vote to see which is which. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Don't know what I'll do it it comes out more or less even. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif

I don't really know if many other people use GG for Gas Giant, hence why I posted it, to see if I (and a few other B5 Modders) was the only one who used it.

I'm guessing the B5Mod is a valid mod. Has been referred to as such for almost a year now. You can be the judge http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I think I may have been misunderstood.

I am a newbie and know next to nothing about mods http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

If you say it is a valid mod, then it is a valid mod and I accept your word for it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif If it isn't, I think you will find a bunch of guys jumping all over you. And then we will have an issue.

So, the only thing I am waiting from you is your discription of the mod in the format such as:

FQM = Fyron's Quadrant Mod

Another point, mods do not have to wait until the acronym becomes common partly because they are put into the fun stuff and partly because they are separate from the main database of acronyms.

Also, if the creator of the mod does not like the current acronym in use for it, I see no problem in the mod's creator asking for a new acronym which he would like to be used. Of course, if the old one is in the database of acronyms, the old one will have to be deleted. Some guys may jump all over me on this, but it seems to me, the creator of a mod should have a major input on the acronym which he wishes to be used.

About GG, see my explanation in the Poll. What is decided in the poll will determine how we treat acronyms such as GG. But whatever is decided, at a bare minimum, if it is in common use, it should be included!"

Edit: I only have one suggestion about acronyms...and that is try to keep it short, sweet and simple. An acronym like XEVTJJR is less likely to be remembered and used than say, XEV.
