i want to create a starmap. is there a maximum # of starsystems you can put on a map. what i am thinking of doing is to ramdomly create a starmap then add empty starsystems to fill the space. they would allow you to create warppoints to other systems without having to go in one jump, find hidden star systems, or create them from nebulae and asteroids, etc. i realize that would be a total of 3082 starsystems.

There's a hardcoded limit of 255 systems; that's the highest it can be set in Settings.txt .

You'll also need a larger SystemNames.txt file; there are several available. The standard file only has around 140 names, IIRC.

You can make systems have more objects in them, thereby simulating more systems, while still having only 255. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

oh well.
another question. is there a way to add ringworld and sphereworld as possible planet types when creating maps using automated map generation.
and another one. anything out there that will allow you to turn gas giants into mini-suns like in 2010 then build ringworld or sphereworld around them.

Planets cannot be changed into stars. If you destroy a Planet, you get an Asteroid Belt, which also cannot be changed into a star.

FQM has a 371 KB system names file, with 39824 names in it.

Check mine (http://se4kdy.cyberwars.com/files/systemnames.htm)

I heard a rumor that 255 is only the limit the game generator can make, and that you can manually make and load maps exeding this limit.
Can anyone confirm?

You should be able to try it easy enough. I am pretty sure I did once and it gave me an RCE when I tried adding the 256th system. But lately when I say I have tested something and found such and such, I have a habit of still being incorrect. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Imperator Fyron - thanks for the information
Andrés Lescano - i have downloaded you system names also, thanks.
Andrés Lescano, geoschmo & Imperator Fyron - unfortunately 255 systems is the maximum, i did get the range check error when adding the 256th system.
so much for trying to avoid being limited to just wormhole travel. i was hoping to simulate hyperspace/warp/jump travel across the galaxy and keep the existing warp points as shortcuts. plus have hidden star systems to explore and find.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">You might enjoy my Hypermaze mod. In the Gold-compatible Version (2.0), only about half of the systems are "normal" space, and the rest are hyperspace systems.

(In the v1.49 "classic"-compatible Version (1.2), about 60% of the systems were hyperspace.)

capnq downloaded your mod. i like the way you simulated hyperspace movement. can battle in hyperspace.

capnq downloaded your mod. <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Great! That's at least four people who've tried it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

I've been thinking about some changes for an updated Version, but I haven't really done any work on it.
