View Full Version : Don't Panic (Hitch Hiker's Guide...)

I am looking at making a few racial tech trees based on the characters, ships, technology found in the novel: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (A trilogy in 5 parts). Yes, it is intended to be light and humorous, but the techs will be competative in the SEIV universe...

That being said, I am looking for any interesting input regarding techs, ships, races etc from those whom are knowledgable of such things.

So far, I am looking at making the Imperial Galctic Government, The Mice, Frogstar Fighters, and the Kriket Robots...

Douglas Admas has once again (I know it is hard to believe) written another Hitchhikers book. Link is here! Salmon of a Doubt isn't a part of the trillogy. It is a seperate book made from Adams' ideas. He wrote more books then the hitchhikers trillogy too. But anyways, the point is, it is not part of the trillogy.

Mr. Flib - aw, crap, wrong sci-fi parody! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Edit: Hmm, maybe a Red Dwarf mod would be fun too... wonder what kind of stuff you could put in there?

Don't forget the IPP components. Nothing like a door with a sunny and cheerful disposition.

The Nutrimatic Drink dispensers.

Vogon fleets.

And, of course the Infinate Improbability Drive.

The Vogon speech file should have some threats to read their poetry.

If you can please substitute Tea as supplies and Planet creators into Magratharean (sp?) Contractors.

There were three types of engines: hyper drive, improbability drive, and bistromathic drive. I think the improbability drive allows your ship to pass through all points of the universe in an instant. The bistromathic drive is more advanced, and you need a bistro, a little restaurant, inside your ship.

Also, there's the Somebody Else's Problem field (SEP) which is like a cloaking device. It doesn't turn your ship invisible, but causes people to ignore it because it becomes somebody else's problem.

There was also the chameloid (I think) death fleet.

For starships you could have a ship component vidscreen that automatically goes opaque at the first hint of danger. Perfect for keeping starship crews from getting too stressed. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

When you research computers up to a high level, you should get the ability to create planets. Remember, the Earth is actually a giant computer created to calculate what the question is to the answer 42.

jimbob

I'd suggest a facility for the "Earth" and the other big computer... Deep Thought?
I suggest this just because "Earth" in the most technical sense was to produce answers, not to supply a place for people to live.
I'd think you'd need to acquire trans-dimensionality before you build either though, because first you need to come in contact with Mice.

How about a very rare, very catastrophic event called "the coming of the great white handkerchief" that will destroy the entire universe?

Val

That and another similiar universe rending event for finding out the ultimate question.

Well, this is a good response. I do not post much because I am not often Online, but I thank you for all of your input. I think I will have a generic Hitch Hiker's guide universe tech, and then I think I will have the races Imperial Galactic Government, Frogstar Fighters, Krikkiteers, and the Tiny invasion fleets of the V'lhurgs and G'Gunthas.

DOes anybody know about the socks and the dryers...

jimbob
November 19th, 2002, 05:04 AM
Yeah, wasn't there a place where all the socks went when they were 'lost' in the dryer? Sort of the lost sock graveyard... or was that in another book?

Anyway, as we all know, in addition to carrying a great deal of static, the average sock also carries a very high quantum charge, allowing it to tunnel through the dryer, into another dimension, to a very specific location - the same place/dimension where all other lost socks go. This in essence would supply the owner of said dimension with all of the socks in the known Universe... given sufficient time.

Now if the owner of said dimension is able to use the socks to provide ship power, food for the crew, weapons' batteries, etc. then he/she/it essentially has obtained an undeminishable supply generator (see quantum generator in normal SEIV game). However this generator, unlike the quantum generator, would carry an incredible amount of static, enabling it to also fire off enormous lightning bolts at enemy ships. The only device that would effectively block it would be integrated Snuggles(tm) or Bounce(tm) armor.

the movie was made in 1996. took place after sylvestor mccoy.

Starring: Paul McGann, Eric Roberts, Daphne Ashbrook, Sylvester McCoy
Director: Geoffrey Sax
It is December 31st, 1999. But will the World survive to see the 21st Century?
Deep in the heart of San Francisco's Chinatown, a young boy is about to lose his life in a hail of bullets. But the gunfire finds a different target - a stranger who steps out of a British Police Box.

Dr Grace Holloway does all she can but cannot save him or understand the mysteries that surround him. Who is this unknown traveller with two hearts? Why has his body disappeared? And who is the madman who appeals for help; claiming to be both the dead man and a time traveller known only as the Doctor?

Elsewhere in San Francisco, another time traveller is on the verge of death. For the Master, the Doctor's oldest adversary, survival entails taking over the Doctor's newly-regenerated body. Meddling with the heart of the Doctor's TARDIS he condemns the Earth to destruction at the stroke of midnight, December 31st.

As the crowds prepare to celebrate the Millennium, Grace is caught in a desperate race against time to help save the Doctor - and mankind...

i beleive either fox or paramount had a hand in making this. it was made for tv. it was a possible pilot for an american made series of doctor who.

Thanks for the info, desdinova. I missed that movie altogether. I used to watch the Doctor Who TV series all the time. I have seen most of the episodes starting from the very beginning with William Hartnell, the first Doctor, to partway through the Sylvester McCoy episodes. My favorite Doctor was Jon Pertwee, the third Doctor. In my opinion, the show started going downhill around the 5th Doctor, Peter Davison, and by the time we got to Colin Baker, some of the episodes didn't make much sense. (The second doctor was the funniest, and the shows most entertaining...)

Speaking of Doctor Who, there are a number of alien races that can become shipsets: the Daleks, the Cybermen, the Silurians, the Sontarans...

Yeah! We can make a Mr. Bean shipset! For the race picture, we'll have Mr. Bean's smiling
face. The ships will be organic-based, and will look like different types of beans.

Green beans - star base
Coffee bean - colony ship
Big jelly bean - dreadnaught
Navy bean - battleship
Lima bean - cruiser
Soy bean - light cruiser
Red bean - frigate
Black bean - escort
Pea pod - carrier
etc

We'll get loincloths embroidered with a picture of Mr. Bean, too.

We can include all the kinds of beans by going to the supermarket and buying a can of bean salad. Dump the contents onto a table, and take a digital picture of it. Scale it down to the appropriate size, and we have the fleet picture.
