Under Empires (F9), click on any player, PROPOSE TRADE we have "GIVE COMM CHANNELS" with a selection of the races we have come into contact with.

What are "Comm Channels" and what are they supposed to do? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif

It allows you to trade communications abilities. For instance, if I can contact you and another player, but you cannot contact the other player, I can trade you the "Comm Channel" for them (which allows you contact) before actually making contact.

Make sense??

EDIT: That is "physical contact"....

Let's see
A = you (in contact with B and C)
B = me
C = other player

I make the decision, I would like to communicate with C.

A (you) facilitate the communication between B (me) and C (the other player).

If the above is true. Is it a one time link or is it permanently established and we (B and C) can communicate in future turns without needing the assistance of you (A)?

This just saves you the trouble of crossing systems.

I have been given comm channels by the AI, communicated with the third race, made treaties, gone to war, crippled them with intel, and then forced them to surrender. All without ever entering their space.

Real funny when I suddenly control their planets and ships, the map just fills itself in even before the log window pops up. Heh. Ah, the power of cheese. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Just think of it as trading phone numbers.

If I tell you that Geo's home phone number is 888-1234, and tell Geo that your number is 456-1122, then you two can talk all you want without further involving me.

Perhaps IP addresses would be a better metaphore, since you can then trade files (treaties), and send each other viruses (intel ops).
