PBW incompatible with IE 6 SP 1?

Ever since upgrading to SP 1 of IE 6, the PBW site has been acting kind of weird. Sometimes (such as right now), it wants to download menu.jsp instead of open it in the page. Very odd.

Fyron, check with your school network's system administrator -- you may be experiencing your troubles not entirely because of what software you are using ... the school may be using a proxy, which isn't wroking well with downstream Users who have IE6SP1 installed. Or the proxy may be slightly java intolerant. OR somehting along those lines.

Do you have any sort of download accelerators or download managers installed? Sometimes they'll try to download files that should be displayed...

I've no idea what's going on here, but it's obviously not IE6/SP1 as a general case. A couple of thoughts:

(1) Is this problem happening to you on any other pages that use both frames and JSP? (Or with any other dynamic content pages, for that matter).

(2) Did you install anything else other than IE6/SP1 at or near the same time?

(3) Did you recently change any settings (I'm thinking cookies here) in IE? Or did the installation change cookie settings for you?

(4) Have you tried clearing your Cache and history?

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Clearing the browser Cache has helped.

I only saw the problem with PBW. Sometimes, it tried to download mainbody.html instead. Most odd.

The short answer to that is: Netscape sucks, royally. Even though they claim to be more standards-compliant than IE, they aren't, by a longshot. Otherwise, PBW would work with Netscape, which it doesn't.

(Note: NS7 might work; I haven't tried it recently.)

Fyron: I'm... really not sure what's going on here. Has *anyone* else seen this happen, so we can at least get a replication and try to figure out what might be the problem?

Could you point me to some other web sites that use a similar coding mechanism? That way, I can see if the problem is just with PBW, or if it is with all instances of that type of coding.

I haven't had any problems on PBW using Mozilla 1.1, but I almost exclusively use PBW's text AI. I only recently switched from Netscape 6.2.1, which could handle the text UI as well.

I use IE 5.5 when I have some reason to use PBW's graphic UI.

I have no problems connecting to the GUI PBW using Mozilla. 6 months ago it had problems but not any more.

I haven't had any problems yet with IE6 SP1, but I only upgraded a couple of weeks ago.

LL mentioned cookies, and IE6 has an additional tab under Tools--> Internet Options called Privacy that controls how cookies are handled. The Edit button at the bottom of the tab can be used to set cookie policy for individual websites. You might try allowing all cookies from seiv.pbw.cc.

Also, what OS are you using, IF? Depending on the OS, somewhere under File Types there's an option to always download or always launch a particular file type. You may need to go in there and set .jsp's to always open (though that could be dangerous on other sites), or at least not automatically try to save.

But, that couldn't be the problem. I haven't changed the file types recently, and installing IE 6 SP 1 wouldn't do that any differently than installing IE 6 did, and the site ran fine under IE 6.

Crud. Hmm... if you clear your temporary internet files again, does the site work properly? If it does, you can set IE to automatically clear out temporary internet files when you close it, under Internet Options--> Advanced under the Security heading. 'Course, this may be a pain if you have a slow internet connection....

If all else fails, you could try reinstalling IE. Something that's worked for me for strange IE-related problems is to refresh all components of IE. Run IE setup, choose a custom install, then select all components, even the ones in bold that IE claims to not need to be updated.

I'm bumping this up from a while ago because it seems at least one person has found a solution. The people who have reported this: are any of you running Proxomitron or similar popup-blocking proxy programs?

I turned Proxomitron off, and still had the problem.

I have IE6 SP1 and run Proxomitron, and have had no problems with PBW after allowing all cookies from pbw.seiv.cc. Even those ones that don't expire until 2471. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif j/k

For anyone who's interested, Mozilla just released v1.2, and Sun has JRE v1.4.1 (not sure how long that's been out).

I haven't had time to install either, yet.

[Edit] And now they've pulled Mozilla v1.2 due to a bug, but intend to fix it soon in v1.2.1.

I use Phoenix web browser, for ordinary playing it works ok at the PBW site but for administrating my game I have to switch to Text based. (Trying to accept players etc, otherwise I got a similar error)

i will be testing pbw on konqueror this weekend to see how it looks... As I am now playing around with the new KDE 2.2 I believe and Konqueror is all wrapped up in that puppy.
