View Full Version : Crystalline Resource Exploit!

OK, I'll confess that I've never actually used the Stellar Plasma Sphere to create a star, so maybe this won't work... but IIRC you don't need anything in a sector (storms, nebulas, etc.) to create a star - you can just create one anywhere you want - so just imagine this: You build a ship with a Stellar Plasma Sphere and a repair bay. You also have some of those crystalline solar resource generators in the system. You create one star per turn for who knows how long. You get boodles of resources... Does this seem right??? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif
(Note: it should also work with Solar Collectors to create supplies, but who cares about that when you can generate infinite resources!!!)

Ed, I do not know. But surely there must be a limit to number of Suns one can create in a system!
I have create several 'Suns'. All though I have only created one in two systems!

As I recall, you can only create a star where there wasn't one already.
The game explanation was that once you created one star from gases in the system, there weren't any left to make another.
The real reason may be to prevent just the exploit you suggested.
Edit:
1). What would be cool would be to use the map editor to make a system with a dozen stars in a Kempler Rosette (I have no idea what that is, heard it on Star Trek) A crystaline race would really want to colonize that system -- what sort of drawback would such a system have -- massive random movement? can a system have a higher chance of events?
2). Ed, that avatar is fantastic. The glowing eyes of Mr. Fibble really freaked out a co-worker here.

hmm. i remember not being able to create one if there was already one there. this worked in the original demo, but i didnt think it worked after that. can you create multiple stars again?

Confirmed: You cannot create a star if a star is already present with Version 1.78. I too remember this being possible to do at one point. Don't recall exactly when it was patched out.

Sorry, my fat fingers! All though I have only created two in one system! <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Should be; All though I have only created one in two systems! Again, Sorry!

Multiple stars in the same system??? You could create multiple stars in the same SECTOR originally. When I complained about that as unrealistic MM changed it so you could only make one star per system. He does that sometimes -- 'overkills' a bug. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Google can't seem to decide whether the term is "Kempler Rosette" or "Klemperer Rosette", but it's several small bodies orbiting a larger one, spaced at regular intervals along the same orbit.

i would not call that overkill. i mean, i dont think there is enough matter in this solar system to scrunch together and make another star out of. not even a little one. one per system, unless they are naturally occuring, seems just fine to me.

Yup, just took a picture of Rimmer with Mr. Flibble from www.reddwarf.co.uk, (http://www.reddwarf.co.uk,) made a few copies of it, added the glow with GIMP, and stuck them all together with a GIF animator - now if only I could GIF's were higher quality... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

So, for instance, if you took five more Earths and placed them every 60 degrees around the sun, they would be very stable, and you'd have a Rosette.

A trinary system should be plenty for a crystaline race -- I only built the solar collectors once. I was loseing badly, and there was a planet in a trinary system. But I couldn't build fast enough to survive.
I began to suspect that I wasn't getting 3 X the resources, but I was.

You cant build a sun in system the already has a sun for a loooooooong time now. This was a discussion topic long time ago (almost when se4 came out).
If it were possible, there would be a way (ab)use the "feature" in different way (not resource gathering). You would just need 1 ship to warp in the system, create a sun and get out. Next turn (or even same turn that sun is created) you would blow up a sun and clear the whole system of all enemy ships, colonies etc. Would be devastating tactic (and not so expensive), especially against AI.
