Aaak! I just hit 400 Posts! I had planned to make a separate thread like this one to make and commemorate my 400th post, but I lost track and made it in the "Mod Idea: Simulating surfaces -> Borg Technology -> Twinkie Physics -> Worldviews" thread (which would be a very strange mod if it were ever implemented http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ).
I guess I could think of a dozen other threads which would be less appropriate for my 400th post, though. (I think the top ten are taken by different incarnations of the shape-shifting name-changing thread.) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Basically if you don't get yourself killed after a while they put you in charge of other guys and make you an officer. You can get to be an officer for just doing your regular job well enough to supervise others, but you don't get a "commision" unless you do something outside of that. Nowadays they send you away to officers training school which is like college. Or you can skip the whole NCO track if you go to college before you join the service.
In the past you could get your commision other ways. Battlefield commisions happen during big wars sometimes. And in olden days you could be given a commision simply by being a landowner or an important member of soceity. That was basically jut a way to keep the riff raff from thinking they were equal to you just because they happend to join the army before you did. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Besides, the Air force needed to get the space defense job. In this day and time, their two legs of the triad are obsolete in every event but an all out first strike. Boomers carry the bulk of our deliverable weapons of mass destruction. Sure the Air force gets the tactical bombing jobs, but there is not a lot of glamour in carpet bombing with BUFF’s, and at today’s prices, we wont be seeing anymore large fleets of heavy bombers. Darkhorse, i dunno what you said. i was actually enjoying the discussion among the services. I agree that the Naval ranks should be used as the Navy would control the ships. The Marines would provide security aboard the ships. The Army would provide the Drop Troops. The Airforce however is not listed in the sci-fi books i have read nor the RPG's i have played. the Navy has its own craft and they piloted the fighters/dropships. though i guess you could put the airforce as the fighters/dropships.
Actually i guess based on this you could use whichever rank you wanted depending on what branch you were in.
edit: guess we can change the name from Airforce to AeroSpace Force.

Stargate and other scifi not withstanding I think it highly unlikely that once we start exploring and working in space on a regular basis it will be handled by any of the terrestrial service branches. Most of it will be handled by NASA, and other research organizations, or by private sector corporations. If for some reason a dedicated military presence becomes neccesay in space, it will likely be an entirely new military branch. Just like the Air Force was originally a branch of the Army until it got large enough, at some point a new service would be formed.

Another argument for the naval side is that the force structure and travel times involved in space warfare are comparable to historical surface navies.
I think it ultimately comes down to which branch of the service the SF author wants to write about, though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I'm partial to Air Force, myself, because that was my father's branch; I seriously considered Air Force ROTC when I went to college.

I'm guessing "topic drift". takes place for two reasons:
1) We all feel very comfortable in this community. It is as if we are talking to friends over a glass of our favorite.
2) We are a very creative and intelligent groupe of people. One idea leads to another and to a seqways from one subject to another.

The Marines would never stand still and just be ship's security. However, if in such a future, would there be a separation of services. In many ways, the Marines and the Army overlap on duties and goals.
The Marines are considered the world's largest special forces command. I'm sure they'd survive and become an assault force in the future as well...going places delicate people in the Air Force and Army wouldn't dare. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

i can see how there could be a new service branch for space travel. however i still believe the current branches would maintain some role in space, similiar to how i said earlier. the Army or Marines would be used for planetary exploration and shipboard defense.
after thinking about it if there is a new branch formed for space exploration it would replace the Navy and Air Force.

Would there be a need for water-based craft, then? I'm sure if we acheive that level of space flight, then we could easily cover the surface of a planet. However, underwater bases (another sci-fi favorite) would be more protected without some water-capable attack capabilities.

Darkhorse wasn't razzing mlmbd; mlmbd baselessly accused Darkhorse of copping an attitude. mlmbd also has yet to explain what prompted that outburst. (Unless he did so in his Lurk Report, which I don't read.)

OK, Here is a list of NCO's (Non-Commissioned Officers; Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, Master Sergeant, First Sergeant, Sergeant Major, Command Sergeant Major, Sergeant Major of the Army. Does that help? <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Dark Horse's reply; mlmbd - [Eek!] That may help, if you're in the army. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif"> Originally posted by mlmbd:

mlmbd, I don't see any reason from what you've just posted that explains why you went ballistic at darkhorse.
Well, I'm off to sleep.

Oh, OK, I see where the problem came from then. I only interpret that smiley as "teasing", not an insult.

I guess I could think of a dozen other threads which would be less appropriate for my 400th post, though. Wow, it's a great feeling to be commissioned, huh? Cool! The sky is brighter, the air is sweeter, life is good! ... actually, it doesn't feel any different.
