I'm in the middle of a game against the AI that I started in 1.49. I just got Gold. Can I continue the game in Gold? Or do I need to finish it before loading Gold? Thanks.

I would bet large sums of money that you cannot change in mid game.... If anyone knows different, please contradict me.
Enjoy your game... It is often that we know the first time we do something, but seldom that we know it is the Last time before it is over...

AFAIK you cannot load se4 1.49 savegame into se4gold. You will have to finish it and start a new one.

You can, however, go from Gold 1.67 to gold 1.78 in the middle of the game no problem.
But the reason you cannot go from pre-gold to gold is because there are alot of hard code changes made to the game, too many in fact to allow this to be done. Sorry.

If you have sufficient space free on your HD, you can have multiple installs in separate folders. You just need to pay attention which folder you're using when you apply patches.
My Malfador Machinations folder currently has subfolders for SEIV v1.49, v1.67, and v1.78.

I think you very well can patch to Gold at least in simultaneous games. At least I did so with my games. You just have to run one turn as the game master before you can enter your empire again. I think it is possible for a turn-based game, too. Just make sure to have a backup of your game in case something goes wrong.

Thanks. I'll just wait before loading Gold. No big thing.
