Here are a bunch of questions that came up in the Committee thread:
Vote away!

I voted ...

Players are immortal, and do not die

If someone sucks at their job, you can vote them out. Besides that, I'm ready for anything. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

RE: Public vs Beta.
This is where the turns will be run. You will still be able to see what's going on even without being a beta tester.
This will affect whether we feel the effect of the TDB bug, and other such things.

Re: Mortality
This is mostly applicable to Generals who will be on the front lines fighting.
If a homeworld gets unexpectedly glassed, some senators could die as well.
It will also make for livelier civilian shipping activity, as ministers, generals and senators physically move around.

They have lots of OTHER people of LOWER ranks to go out and do the dieing for them.

Oh wait, you mean if ministers die on a planet. OK. Heh. Heh. Got it. I thought a minister died when voted out. Ok.

"Having completed research in ramming warheads, scientific director Arkcon is traveling to the vacation planet Riza, after leaving a cryptic message for the fighter crews, "Go get 'em guys, make us proud"

Otherwise teh General is going to be the shortest lifespan of the various units. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Perhaps the general would be attached to the group of troops involved in the battle and would survive as long as some of the troops do. THat might be tough to account for with a special avatar though.

I don't believe that the P&N mod nor devnull mod is really up to this kind of game.

I feel that Proportions would be best for this "real-life like" game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Edit: Post 800!

You could make your Character be any rank you please.

That's a good point. if we have the crew quarters serve as cargo space the General would likely remain on a non-transport ship with the fleet so he doesn't end up getting dropped onto the planet itself during the firefight. Otherwise the General is going to be the shortest lifespan of the various units.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Quite possibly. The generals will be gaining experience, though, and may become quite powerful.
They will also be loaded Last, so they drop Last, and tend to be hit Last.

How about someone who wants to be the intel minister? I don't normally use lots of offensive intel against the AI, but I might covert recon a planet to see what's there or insurrect a troublesome (or valuable)ship. It would be useful for someone to direct these functions.

Well, I've just tested it, and the savegames made in 1.82 don't open in 1.78.

So you'd have to use screenshots, stories and spreadsheets to find out what's going on.

Maybe it's obvious, but the AI's won't be much of a challenge unless we use the AI's from the TDM ModPack. Otherwise, in order to include *everyone*, I think we should use unmodded SE4.

Having the TDM modpack isn't really nessesary for the players anyways, but yes, definitely TDM AIs would be good to play against.

Actually SJ what I would like is initially to be the captain of an exploratory vessel. If my character survives a few years maybe he'll retire from the navy and accept a posting as a colony governor in a border system or something. I don't need a vote on anything, as a Captain I don't think he would get one, except maybe on where the ship goes. Just give me a ship and let me go off seeking new worlds and new civilizations. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

please change a vote for 1.78 to beta, didn't realize that part. Also, how about you get to keep some exp and money and stuff when you die, yet you do get set back a bit. Also, i think P&N should be used, but only to make other cool races, the Shrapnel race shoudl be strictly SE4 normal

Suicide Junkie

Well the votes are in, and it seems pretty clear that the preferences are:
(1) Avatars, Mortal.
Respawning, but lose experience, rank, job/promotions.

(2) Unmodded SE4
P&N was close, but no cigar.

(3) SE4 1.78
