Under the heading of useless polls what is the accepted way to spell modding? I ask because I often search "Modding" and then again under "moding" So what is it? One 'd' ot two?

Two D's, because one D would be pronounced like "mode-ing".

So far nobody thinks it's spelled "moding". Spelled, speled, spelt? Nah, must be "spelled". Notice how if you keep staring at a word, it begins to look strange and you become unsure of how it's spelled? Or maybe it's just me.
I agree with PvK, it is pronounced "modd - ing", not "mode -ing", since modding is an abbreviated form of "modifying". Even though "modifying" has only one d, we need the two d's to preserve the pronunciation.

I always try to vote for the nonsense option in polls if there is one. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

I voted for one D because, well it looks right to me. And one D is more efficent than two D's. Since neither is a real word anyway the idea is we are making up a word so we can be lazy and shorten the correct term, modifying. Modding is only two letters shorter then modifying. Since we are making it up anyway we might as well save the third letter. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Well, I think it's better to make a new word not have an irregular pronunciation, where possible.
Also, one can check how people are using the word currently. A simple unscientific method is to use an Internet search engine. Google finds about 6850 instances of "moding", including "MODing" and a different gaming term, which has to do with role-playing (see THIS LINK (http://www.geocities.com/towersofalharaman/moding.html) ).
Google finds about 235,000 cases of "modding", however.

Ah, now I am curious as to how the RP "Moding" is pronounced!
PvK

RP "moding" is apparently pronounced the way it would appear to be: mode-ing. At least, a couple of the articles I found dealing with the term also use the present form "to mode". I am still wondering what the etymology of the term is, though. I think it is probably refers to a mode of roleplaying speech. There are then sub-types of moding, and the articles I found all were relating to improper roleplaying, where a roleplayer would speak in a mode that game them control that their character would not have, by saying what other characters do, or by acting based on knowledge their character would not have, or by claiming to do impossible or near-impossible things.

I dont' care. I still think two d's looks wierd. I can't think off the top of my head of any other word with two consecutive d's. But if it's important to have it spelled with two d's I'll just go back to using modifying. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

"madding" is not a word. Maddening could be, but madding isn't (assuming that comes from modifying the word mad, at any rate).

According to Merriam - Webster
Word - A "speech sound" that comnicates a meaning
Based on that defanition, "Modding" is a word. Most of us have an understanding of what is meant when we see the word. Since the English laguage is a "living language" we can add words to it as long as they comunicate.
The other meaning of "modding" to me is modifying a computer but I can remember seeing it used 30 years ago when I sold pLastic models. There was always talk of "modding" a tank from one Version to another.
