How does happiness work? I'm doing some mod work and i want to know what it has to do through culture modifiers, racial traits, and troops/facilites. What happens with lowered happiness? How much is tooooo much? What if i had like -40% happiness? How many troops would i need? I want to have a required 20 troops per planet but not too many more. Does the size of the troop affect happiness?

one more question, if i increase maintence does that make it easier or harder to maintain ships?

Happyness is controled by happyness.txt. In short:
less happyness means less production. Eventually they riot and you get NO production.

Size does not affect happyness. Neither, for that matter, does what is on the troop. A heavily armed full tech Large Troop provides as much happyness as a cockpit only Small Troop.

All racial characteristics are bonuses. Up is good, down is bad.

Technically, unhappiness is caused by an increase in the anger level, not a decrease in the happiness level. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif I have a chapter in my modding tutorial (linked in my sig) on happiness. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Yep. Bump it up to 150. Then Neutral happiness type might actually be an option. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Has anyone tried to take a large negative modifier for happiness and then research troops early on to offset this? Any success or failure stories?

Edit: I mean in an non happiness modded game

IMO, that would be a bad idea. Tiny and Small non-breathables would probably be rioting forever. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

If a bloodthirsty race declares war and then switches to a none treaty and then declares war again against the same opponent do they get -100 bonus everytime?

None isn't a treaty. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif If you meant Non-Aggression, then don't they get angry when you sign a NA Treaty?

Ah, I see you can't cancel a declaration of war like you can a partnership - but no you if I read the data files correctly there is no penalty for a Non Aggression.

I wonder if it possible to MOD the treaties so that WAR is viewed as a cancelable treaty type by the computer - thus allowing you to end a war without signing a treaty....
