Some else has to click on the rate member text under your name, and assign you a 1-5 star rating. People are becoming indifferent to their rating.
Offer a strategy, draw a shipset, write a mod, help a newbie -- people will rate you up, and the average number of stars will be highlighted.
Start an argument, insult someone personally -- and someone could try to rate you down, but the law of averages may prevent that from being noticeable. So up rating doesn't happen often.
You can make yourself unrateable. Many people seem have risen above concerning themselves with the rating system.

Yeah, I said once before that I like my rating just where it is, thank you very much ... not too low, not too high. At least until I write a shipset or mod.

Nah, you don't have to do anything to get rated. Just ask. We'll rate you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Next time you post you'll see your stars, unless you turn them off.
EDIT: Actually I can see them now. I guess someone just had to post to the thread. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I think that you had to convince other members that you're a worthy member of the community and deserve the hign rating they will give you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
