View Full Version : PBW Server is down - and back up again
geoschmo
January 1st, 2003, 06:48 AM
Sorry folks. Looks like the glitches today were a symptom of a greater problem. The server is down. Not bootage at all. Some kind of a hardware problem.
I'll take it into the shop on Thursday, they are all closed tommorow. How long we are down depends on what they find I suppose.
Fortunatly thanks to your generosity we have a little money in the account to play with. If the problem is not too serious we should be able to get back up and running soon.

Donations go through paypal, not the PBW server. So if you feel the motivation to give, you can do it even when the server is down.
I did some tests and it appears the problem is more than just the power supply as I had hoped. We should still have enough in the account to cover the repairs, but it may be just enough.
If you wish to donate to help replenish the fund for the monthly expenses you are welcome to do it anytime.

EDIT: Hmm, I tired putting a donate button in my sig, but it didn't seem to work right. Here it is.<form action="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr" method="post">

Ok, the bad news first. The Power supply went bye bye, and it looks like it took the motherboard with it.
Good news is that prices have dropped so much in the Last year we can get same model replacments for about half what we paid Last time. Parts are on order and if shipping goes well we should be back up and running by Monday.

I would never ask anyone to give beyond their means for sure. Noone should feel like the server won't be fixed if they can't send in some money. We have already ordered the parts and what's in the account will cover it. Any donations anyone sends in now will go to replenish the account for future monthly expenses and emergencies. We just need some time now to get the parts in and get the server running again.
Any of you that remember Last years weeks long down time it's very unlikely that will happen again this time. Your previous support has allowed us to be more responsive and minimize the down time. Thank you.

I usually try to donate $10 a month (when I'm in a game) but I miss a month here and there. Still, I should be listed in the Battleship Category by now...grin.
I think it's worth it to have the opportunity to play with lots of different people.
I guess I'll send another $10 this month...as said below...to help with buying duct-tape and spit the next time the server has a problem...grin. Too bad you can't afford one of those new servers from Compaq like we just got at work (Drool !!!)...I think just about everything is hot-swappable (except the motherboard).
Finally, I would hope the makers of the games would give some support...after all, it makes SE4 much more appealing.

But otherwise, everything is well. Especially the scroll-over info about games.

I have only used the graphics. I was disconcerted about the back button not working until I figured out that you can just use the navigation buttons and still get anywhere you need to go.

Actually that was a multinational expeditionary force. Most of them were Tesco's ships built by my empire and given to him under the "Lend-Lease" act of 2465.3. I had a few obsolete rust buckets tagging along just for training new recruits. I anticipated your dastardly plan to sacrifice your own system to take out the fleet, but could not reach the sun in time to prevent it. However, I was able to record evidence of your war crime which I plan to broadcast on a wide beam transmission to the rest of your empire. We'll see how happy they are to build your ships for you when they see how casually their own emporer regards their lives. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

What's all the crying here for? PBW is nice, but your game hosts should be ble to run their games in its absense. One of my games has run 3 turns since PBW went down.
It seems people forget that SEIV was played before there was PBW. As a host I have even sent a few nag Messages out to the Last players to submit turns (I didn't want my players to feel to at ease being off line from PBW).

So should I run the turn at home forfeiting all the uploaded turns I can't download.
Should I request all to download to me? No 18 players is too much to keep track of, individually reminding them to upload to me instead, explaining etc.
It's a newbie game and belive me, I've had a lot of other problems related to us being newbies without trying to explain to all how to send files to me etc(I know it sounds simple but beleive me it will be complicated, If I tried to say this to all I'd drown in e-mails (not all are very good in english either!)).

Yes Ruatha, we are friends in NGC! I just had the game initials wrong.
WRT the game logistics, I think it's going rather well, with almost everyone submitting on time or even early. The first 40 turns have taken less than 6 weeks, haven't they?
I'm still having withdrawl pains with PBW down. I'm not even sure that I'll remember what my plans were for any of the 4 games I'm in the games after more than a week off...Greybeard

Well, due to it being my first time as admin it was a bit "bumpy" in the beginning.
It's set on 48 hours turn time but it isn't many turns that has been run due to time-outs, most has uplaoded before the turn time is out. I think we've had one or two replacements early, but since then none.
So now it runs at approximately the same turn-over time as the other two games I'm in (with 8 players each). (Wich means I get three games at once and then have to waith atleast a day to play again....)

How do I get the status line at the end of the Posts to show more information, as FROM etc?
Fixed it.
Will be working all night so I can't check on the status of the PBW server until tomorrow, just one player left to upload on a game. What has happened during all this time? Severeal months must have passed in the SE4 universe, or do time stand still when the server is down? Some temporal bug maybe??

Hey Geo, I go to manually run the turn myself in Return to Hell. And when I go to upload the game turn to send to everyone and the bottom frame goes to "Page cannot be displayed" any reasoning behind this? I have tried a few times now. At times I joke around a lot, but this time, I do have something serious to say.
The first time PBW was down, I wrote the "Chicken Little" thing with the sky falling down, thinking it was very funny.
I know now that it was a way of releasing my own tension.
But in doing so, maybe, inadvertently, I transfered some of it to George.
Sometimes, I don't think we recognize or appreciate the service George is doing.

But the discussion does bring up a very good point.
Is it possible to have a game with a guy/gal teams. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
The wack'in and yak'in division is interesting.
Would it promote better relations between the "duo players" Or would there be major discord (the guy wants the super-duper annihilator weapon whereas his she wants to trade for Farm Facility 2).
And would it spill over and have major repercussions in other areas of their daily life (the wife/girlfriend is so pissed at being pressured to get the super-duper weapon that she starts to withhold certain "interactions" with her sig.other). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Normally I could not change the time without kicking off at least a couple games, but right now I still have the autoprocessing off so no games will run because of time limits anyway. They either have to have all turns in or the game owner has to force the turn manually to run from the game admin screen.

It's working for me. China doesn't want you to explore space in the I-net?

It was down when Dreamplace posted, and most of the day yesterday. It was back up though by the time Mephisto posted. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

The problem might not be PBW this time.
I'm having trouble connecting to some other US sites (IBM for example), but obviously not all of them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

No news from Geo today... Or again it is the difference in time zones and he is still sleeping... or his ISP has problems and he cannot post any updates here... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif

I hope he don't go public with his home adress.
Imagine 3 or 4 am in the morning, fast asleep when a mob of PBW players comes knocking down the door,
"-Just wanted to let you know the site is down, can you fix it when you wake up? We hope you don't have anything else to do!
Please, go back to sleep now and We'll just sit here waiting in the corner."

I know that you all know this already, but one sure fire way of helping him keep the server going is to donate $ to the project.

Yeah, having ISP troubles. No ETA, but these things don't usually take too long.

Sorry to pee in the soup folks.. but I get a range check on the .gam file for my current game (Sweet Game 1.49 #1, tescosamoa is running it). I suspect a server problem, is that feasible? Is it occurring with other games?

I think it might be a DNS problem - using the text name doesn't work, but using the numbers [66.134.102.75] pops it right up. heh.

Rigelian. The problem you are having is jsut with your game. I have notified the game owner and the player whose turn is causing the problem. Will get you going as soon as possible.
Atari, I don't think anyone else is having the same problem you are. Although sometimes DNS problems are limited to certain geographical areas, so it is possible.
