All I ask is that it simulates capital ship combat as capital ship combat, and not fighter dogfights. If it does that, then I'll be happy.

it looks like its using standard SE4 components, I wonder if we can use standard SE4 MODs with it? and its an RPG! I wonder what that means, exactly. Think its going to be like TradeWars?

... screen shots?!?
wow, development must be progressing MUCH faster than with SE4!
Guess it must be all those folks Aaron recruited - when he started on SE4, he was working alone, right? But then he started recruiting people...
edit: summer 2003 eh? wouldn't it be funny if this comes out before MOO3 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif it may not be SE5, but it's close...
heh, most of the new pages say "dungeon odyssey q&a" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
maybe by the time this game comes out I'll have some money, and... hey, Amanda's birthday is in the summer, and she likes computer games and RPG's http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif
wow... real 3D ships... in a SPACE EMPIRES game... just wait till SE5! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif wonder what those orange ships are, don't really look like any of the standard races...
Too bad some of those 3D planets and space stations look distorted http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif still, pretty darn impressive!
Hm, we're now using the Stars! ship design formula, where you put items in slots? (See screenshot with description of Armor component)
You know, this explains why there hasn't been any SE4 patch in a while... with Malfador working on THIS

So you all finally get to see it.
I have to admit this is more advanced than the Last Version I saw.
And I don't know if Aaron decided to go this route but Last time I discussed the game with him I had suggested a heavy "privateer" stance for the game, and he seemed to like that idea very much.
Take that how you will http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif .

Looks good. However, I don't want SE5 to be anything like that. Such 3d designs limit the creation of new shipsets. As a long time fan (played SE2, SE3, etc) I believe that making SE5 similar to that is a BAD idea...

I wonder what the gameplay will look like.
Can you command fleets, multiple ships?
Could you build you own ships if you get a spaceyard component?
Could you build/buy space stations then?
What about the missions, there are mission to furthere the storyline, but are there also random missions, to escort a transport, or destroy a starbase for an empire?
Would it then be possible to create your own SE universe and play without the story missions?
Are the AI empires autonomous, eg not scripted, so that you can influence their development?

What do you mean by "a subscription game"?
Growltigger
January 17th, 2003, 04:14 PM
I dont know what subscription game means but I must admit to hoping that SEV would do a few 3d things, like the system and movement being portrayed in 3D, and maybe the ships to?
I still want message delays to be built in, ie it takes time from one of your ships sighting an enemy fleet for that message to get back to your homeworld so that you can issue new orders to a fleet etc but this is just one of my previous ongoing rants!!

After that it costs so much a month to play. There are several of these games out there right now. Such as EverQuest, Dark Space (http://www.darkspace.net/index.htm), Shattered Galaxy (http://www.shatteredgalaxy.com), etc. They have a persistent universe. The subscription is to provide funds for maintaining multiplayer servers and updates.

I would have to agree with David on this one. I don't think Aaron would do the pay to play idea. Of course I could be wrong but I just don't see him doing that.
Wonder how hard it would be to set up your own mission... That would be cool for modders to set up some missions for others to play. But I imagine it would be hard to do and hard to put in so that ones could mod that aspect of it.
I'd also have to say that I'm sure that Aaron will make it so you can play a normal game without the missions.

If Aaron is reading or ever reads these Posts, I do hope he can tweak SEV so you do have communication lag.
I used to play Starfire the board game and one of the best bits for me was the interface between orders and communication. Unless one of your ships had somehow got a message to your command and control centre that an invading fleet from the Horrible Empire of Wubbya the Woothless was attacking your outer systems, you couldnt just merrily intercept it with the 6th Fleet on the pretense that "hey, they were going to that system on maneuvres"!! - you had to work out how long it took the message to get back home (depending on how it was sent as light speed transmissions couldnt get thru warp points) and how long it took your orders to the fleet to get to them...
the other thing I would like would be survey and scanning rules, in order to decelerate the time it takes to plant colonies and find warp points, how'sa about your science ships having to survey the system for planets, planet type and then warp points so that it takes a few goes....
more realistic, more fun
just MHO

hmmm, interesting, send a scout to get the lay of the land (system) then follow up with a Science/Survey vessle to discover the 'meat' within the system. I like that idea. The communications lag is also a good idea but might be better suited in some kind of multiplayer game where different players play different ships and ie: a player piloting a scout ship would have to send a message to his 'lord' about his discoveries. then his display would be updated. very interesting...

RPG does not automatically equal MMORPG.
In fact, Shrapnel's tendency to buck the "conventional wisdom" of the industry implies to me that they wouldn't even attempt a MMORPG. (Not to mention their size; Shrapnel doesn't have the resources to do a MMORPG.)

From the looks and from the feature list I think it will be some kind of 'Elite' in the SE universe. I don't see that in multiplayer, let alone a persistant Online universe. Given the fact that it will be moddable I think we will see a lot of fun hours/days/months/years(?) of exploring the universe http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif . I don't think SE:Starfury is in any way connected to SE:V. Starfury is set in the SE universe, but that is where the connection ends. (I could be wrong!) I believe that SE:V will be just that, the next evolution of SE:IV I really don't think Aaron is planning to go the 3D ship-level route for SE:V. He might include a mix of 2D and 3D like displaying the systems and starmap in 3D while keeping the rest in 2D. I for one don't believe that a game 'has' to be one 'or' the other. Some aspects of the game are imho better suited for 2D while others can easilly fit well in 3D.
Starfury is looking great, and I also look forward to seeing SE:V. I'm sure Aaron is full of ideas and has a few tricks up his sleve.

Heres My Two Cents...and I expect change back http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
It looks and from the demo...a single ship exploring, pirateing...you name it universe so...think Elite, Privateer, etc...
As far as Online play...it could be Online without pay...IE: Neverwinternights...
It could have a universe with parameters...that give a random function, with certain parameters, and the missions will always be different..
Now I want to know if there will be customization of my ship...and I can pick different types of ship hulls, and if I can switch sides during a war, and if I can....(author continues to ponder...)

OT: Freelancer
Pathfinder: I just checked out the site. As long as it's not MMORPG, or whatever, I may try it. It still sounds like it could be a good Privateer type game.
-----
OK, back on Topic now: I got some questions from the Starfury site
1: "24bit 3D real-time rendered graphics."
Does this mean Starfury will use 3D-acceleration? I would assume it's 3D-accelerated but "24bit 3D" does not guarantee 3D-acceleration.
2: "Freeform structure"
I hope this means some random missions as well as a set storyline. A set in stone storyline would get boring but a totally random mission game would also loose it's interest. Plus, the ability to create a storyline would be great for MODs (see below).
3: "Complete game customization allowed by players”
Great to see this! I hope we get more details soon. Hopefully, the tech-tree and AI files will be easier to modify than with SE4’s. Also the 3D ship format is easy to convert to. I’ve got allot of ships, most of ‘em for the Babylon 5 SE4 MOD, that I’d love to convert for Starfury. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Even the name is a little B5-ish.

Is it just me or what? When I went to the Starfury site, the menu on the left was kind of big (especially on my meager 14" screen running at 800x600, it took up close to half my screen) I went to the site on my brother's computer (he has a 17" monitor running at 1280x1024) and it still looked kind of big.
