I hear snips here and there about SE5. Does anyone know if it is definitly in the works? And if so is it going to happen this year, next year, a couple years?

Aaron is working on the next patch for SEIV and also his new game. SE: Starfury.
He mentioned himself that some parts of Starfury might be in SEV. Look for the thread with the interview with Aaron that David posted.
SEV will indeed happen. I doubt it will be this year as Aaron is planning on a release of Starfury sometime this summer. At soonest I think SEV will be out early next year but that is probably pushing it.
Edit: I got the link of the interview for you. Its here... http://www.shrapnelgames.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=007965
Read through that, Aaron mentions SEV.
Edit 2: I found where Aaron mentioned SEV. It was only in this one question that was asked. Q: Is this a preview of what the combat for SE:V might be?
Aaron: Yes and no. This is definitely the technology that we will use for a large portion of SE5. Both the System View and the Tactical Combat view in SE5 will be in real-time rendered 3D like Starfury. But it will not be the same game mechanics. Starfury has you only controlling your own ship in space. SE5 combat will involve you commanding multiple starships from an overhead view. <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Is that enough information for you? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I would hazard to guess that SE:5 would be released in summer or fall of 2004. But I wouldn't mind if it came out earlier http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif .

It would be very hard for Aaron to get SEV out before the summer of next year. With the release of Starfury coming this summer and no doubt it will recieve a patch or two. Then to begin development on a totally new game would take quite sometime to accomplish.

If no development has been done yet, I would say no sooner than 2005.

dont forget that mechanics are already in work and the ground for future SE5 rendering system would be laid in SE:SF. Game concept would be another question though - i have no doubts that Aaron will make SE5 as different as was SEIV when compared to SEIII. Same, but at the same time much different game.

I think it'd be cool to link players in both starfury and SE4 making some kind of way to play out battles like that, maybe not. I'm insane.

My Question is what sort of computer speed will they need? low end? 166+? SE4 runs on my 200 now and I can not afford to replace it yet http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

I seriously doubt SE5 will be out in 2004.
AFAIK MM is still a relatively small company, and depending on how different the SE5 gamelogic will be from SE4 (re-useability of the code), i'd think it could take more then 2 years development time.

This may be a good time to start putting a couple of sawbucks a month into the "do not touch, I'll chop off your hands if you do, computer fund." http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

If SEV is going to use rendered (not pre-rendered) graphics for ships, I think you may need to upgrade your computer. Or at least your video card.
2005 sounds reasonable, but I agree with Capt. Kwok, I wouldn't mind if it came out sooner http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

so i thought i would stop in here and stir the pot. first of all, i need to state that what follows is not a promise or a firm comittment, or an official statement. its an idle off-hand remark. so take this with a grain of salt, and if you start to get your hopes up, use more salt.
(weds, dec 11, 2002):
Thanks for the bug report. We'll add it to our list for the next patch.
We are currently in the design stages for SE5, which we will hopefully
release be Christmas of next year!
Aaron<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Now, im not a beta tester, and im not under any kind of NDA, so i dont feel like im letting any secrets out. since this isnt a secret, and its not a promise, and everyone knows its in the works anyway. what "design stages" means to me, is that they are not coding anything yet, but are penciling together some rough drafts and feature ideas. If starfury starts taking alot of time, i can easily see this game slipping by a year or two. If MM keeps the schedule they expect, maybe it will be out for xmas '03.
ya never know.
