View Full Version : Any way to list enemy ships?

I often spend a great deal of time scanning the map, looking for enemy ships. Can I somehow get a list of enemy ships that have been spotted?
Thanks,

Look at the galaxy map.
Any system with an alien presence will have a triangle marker instead of a simple circle.

Thank you, SJ. But, the triangle only says there is at least one ship, right? What if there are two, and the ship set blends in to the background. Is there some way to find enemy ships within a system?

also once you have scanned an enemy ship its design appears in the designs box. this has been helpful at keeping track of enemy tech progress.

do you mean a list like the one of you ships showing their status, orders and location? if so then i have not found one yet, so i would say no.

That is too bad. If I wanted to exploid this, I might design a ship set where all the ships look like little clusters of stars that match the background. No one would ever see me coming...! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

actually there is talk of an invisible shipset. not sure if it has already been made or not.

...Except that everyone would replace your shipset with one resembling a glowing white box the minute they had to squint to find your ships. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif I think this already happens fairly frequently on PBW.

How do I replace it with another shipset or "glowing white box"?
The only way I found this ship was to use the play movement log.

It's fairly simple to replace ships with a "glowing white box". Just open up the small ship pictures in MSPaint or your editor of choice, and make it all white. Glowing white box.

If not, then if a player didn't want to bother with DLing someone else's shipset, couldn't they just copy an AI set and change the name to match the "new" one?

It would have zero effect on PBW. Modding the images only affects what you see on your own computer.
As for not bothering to DL a set, you can do that, but it would be more work, because you would need to rename all the files, too. Although, a program or batch file could be made to do this.

If you do not want to download shipsets, you can just leave everything as it is and let the game choose a stock shipset for those races. The problem is that the shipsets may change everytime you load a turn. What I mean is when you load a turn and one player used a shipset which you do not have on your computer, the game will choose (random?) a stock shipset for that race. Next time when you load a turn, the same race may be using a different stock shipset. You can live with that of course but... There are people putting lots of effort in making a nice-looking shipset for others' playing pleasure so I think that 100 kbytes is worth downloading. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

It's probably more practical to just put a white dot on each ship, or to do a flood fill in white around the ship. If you turn them into actual white boxes, it's kinda hard to tell what size they are. You may also want to go into the shipset's Main.bmp and change the empire color (sets the color of the numerals which indicate how many ships there are in a sector, among other things).

PvK<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">There is indeed a very useful piece of free software that does this, which can be found at
CKRename (http://www.musicsucks.com/CKSoft/CKRename/)
In one of my PBW games I am a replacement player, and I didn't like the shipset - lets just call them the "Vogons." So, I replaced all the .bmp files in the "Vogon" shipset's folder with the .bmp files for the Pyrochettes, and renamed all them to Vogon_*_* (It was very easy with the rename program). Voila! Now I see the Pyrochettes, and everyone else sees the "Vogons" (unless they've done the same thing on their computer). The game is much more fun to play now. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

As a newbie, I started 4 PBW games at once, all of them with Cue Cappa. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif
The problem is that the color of Cue Cappa is deep purple which blends in with the black background of the screen.
I'd very much like to change the color so I can read the numerals.
I went into the Cue Cappa's Main.bmp and found some icons in the middle of the screen.
What do I do now?
I am a utter Newbie at this and have no idea what to do. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif

Load it in a paint program (e.g. Start/Accessories/Paint) to load the file, blow up the view so you can easily work with pixels, and then color in all the dark purple with a lighter purple, or whatever color you want.

Actually though, the Cue Cappa look pretty bright to me - you might just want to adjust the brightness and contrast on your monitor...

If you want to edit the file, and you have a program [such as Photoshop or MS Photo Editor (comes with some Versions of Office)] which allows changing the "Gamma" of the image, that can also easily make it brighter in one simple step.
Of course, if you like the images but just want to brighten the digits and text, you can just brighten the plain rectangle (second position from left, bottom half).

Glad to help.
The first two are big and small flags for the "presence" and owner ID indicators when a unit is spotted in a system, or examined, for example, or when flags are shown for combat dialogs, etc.
Next is the generic seeker image (for organic parasites, for example). Then the CSM seeker image. Then the plasma missile image.
