Can one give A.I. races passwords? Can one do this in a PBW game? And, more to the immediate point http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif can one add a password to an A.I. race in a PBW game so that players cannot (inadvertently, of course) SPY on the A.I.
God I feel dumb.

You can give the AI a password before the game starts by adding it to the Empire File.
If you are the admin of the game, then you need to run the turn manually on your machine and change the password, the same as you would if a user forgot their password.

You can't spy on the AIs in a PBW game unless the empire was started under human control, and then the player left. But even then, you'd have to know the password in order to spy.
Well, the Host can spy, but hosts don't normally do that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

If the host added AI empires without a password, it is no problem opening their turns. Whether they started as human players or not, makes no difference (except of course that former human empires tend to have passwords and thus can't be opened).

I think I must be confused about how the PBW site uses passwords. When signing up for a game on the site, it is crucial that the password you list be the same as the password you use when creating your race. How does this apply to A.I. races? I did create the game "by hand" (i.e., added the enemy A.I.'s myself), and did not put a password in for the races. If I now add a password, will this mean the PBW site cannot access the A.I.?? By the way, how would I add a password? If I upload a turn for the A.I. in which I change password, won't this undermine the A.I.'s activity that turn?
Thanks,
Merry

Changing AI passwords is easy, and it will not affect PBW being able to access the turns at all. You have to process the turn offline for it to work. What you do is open the game as the host, but before you hit end turn hit game menu, options, reset passwords. Then select the AI players you want to change the passwords for. Be careful not to select the human players. It will tell you what the new passwords are, but you don't really need these since these are AI players. And hit end turn. Zip the resulting game files and upload it as the next turn. From that point on the AI players will be password protected.

Actually it's not "crucial". But it is neccesary for a repalcement player to succesfully take over your empire if you leave the game. PBW does not need passwords for empires at all. The only password PBW needs to process the turn is the Game master password.

It doesn't at all. Just as with the players, the AI passwords are not needed for PBW to process the turn.

This thread is about PBW so this has nothing to do, but the password of all AI races in a quick-start game is "master"

Geoschmo<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thanks. Once I've run the turn, I need to "Upload Replacement Turn", right? Do I need to click "REPLACE current turn"?
Thanks,
Merry

No, don't click the "Replace current turn". If you do then PBW does not increment the turn number when you upload. This wont have any real effect on the game, but it might confuse some of your players because the PBW and the actual in game turn will be different. That is used in cases where something got screwed up with processing and you want to rerun the Last turn or something.
