If you are bored, and want to have something to spend a little time on while surfing the web, feel free to sign up for and play This Game (http://astmod.com/blacknova).
I seem to have gotten it to work ok, and would enjoy having a few players giving it a whirl. The game is blacknova/traders and was created by game designers from Source Forge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/blacknova)
I installed it as it looks like a fun game to play.

Tips:
1. If your in an alliance, and you want the other alliance members to access your worlds for resources gathering or trade, you need to make the world a Corprate World.
2. Once your hull get too big, trade becomes less effective. This is why you have planets. Have them produce resources that you then transfer to your ship and sell to other ports.
3. GET AN ESCAPE POD. If your ship is destroyed, the Pod will save your money.
4. SAVE MONEY in the IGB. It adds interest.
5. Transport population to your planets. Try to get them up to 25 million.
6. Produce about 15% energy if your world is supporting fighters as sector defenses.
7. Never attack a planet that is bigger than you.
8. Find another SPEICAL port like 871 as 0 will begin to kick you if your ship becomes to big.
9. Get your ship engines to 10. This will reduce the amount of turns used when moving through real space.
10. The more planets you have the more your wealth will increase.
11. Join an alliance or form one.
12. Use Becons to post Messages to players who enter your space.
13. Post some fighter and set them to TOLL to collect funds.
14. Establish Trade routes and use them.
15. To generate money on your planets, reduce the % of resources being created.
20 20 20 15 Pop Cash 10 10
5 5 5 15 Pop Cash 5 5
This will prompt the Population to produce Money and not resources.

I haven't yet found a special port with planets in the sector. There's got to be some other way, as well.
To deploy sector defenses, click Devices. It should list Fighters and Mines (which go to the same page). You can choose how many of each to deploy, and either Toll or Attack mode for the fighters.

Special PORTS do not have planets. You can not build planets in special ports either.

this game is addictive. fortunately since i have used up all my starting turns i can only play twice a day now. once in the morning and once in the afternoon. rest of time have to wait for turns to accumulate. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
question: how do you post fighter and mines?
also once i paid off my loan my score appears to have gone back up. i suggest you dont take out huge loans as the interest adds up quickly.

Ok, I was mixing up Free-trade Territory and the Free Trade Alliance (or whatever it's called). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Another tip: Don't spend more time trading at the beginning that it takes to upgrade your ship hull. Trading at each larger size is 50% more efficient = saves turns. You could upgrade hull and engines at the same time, also, to make real-space trading plausible.

tesco samoa

the web admin has the organics turned off i believe... so do not use it at all... set it to zero... As you do not need it and population will increase without organics..
Ore is needed if you wish to build fighters and mines on the planet.
Energy is needed for you fighters during battle.
so 5% min.
Remeber that what is not used to build items is used to create credits... So you can just go out and buy stuff instead... If you have the turns to do it.

I would suggest that you do as he does, and sit on your turns for a while, get your hull size up to 25 and then create a ton of planets, say twenty or so, then spend your turns and money setting the colonist level between ten and twenty five million.
(I am thinking about giving everyone a turn bonus of 2500 turns except for Atrocities and myself who have had more turns and game time. Let me know if you would like this.)

Your base is just a way to store more money and to allow you to access your planets production from the PLANETS - CHANGE PRODUCTION window on the upper left hand side.
PLANETS lists all of your planets, and if they have a base, CHANGE PRODUCTION will show them and you can alter your production from that window on all of your planets at the sametime.
Messages at the top of the system are created by using BEACONS in the DEVICE window.

Also, if you build 3 bases within a system, (one per planet) You gain control of that system and can set the system settings.

still trying to figure out how to scan planets defensive/offensive capabilities. spent some time scanning others planets and ships and have noticed that the planets have sheilds, fighter and torpedo launchers and beam weapons just like ships. how is this determined? is it based upon population?
edit: for those of you i scanned i am not hostile at this time. just trying to learn more about the game.

Your ability to scan is limited by the size of your scanner on your ship. (Ok, keep it clean)
You can have a trillion fighters and torpedo's on a planet. There is a formula for how production of fighters and torps are governed, but as far as I know there is no limit to how many a planet can have.
NOW, fighters deployed as sector defense have to have ENERGY from the planets, or they will reduce in numbers over time.
Scanning a planet is to determine whether or not your ship is capible of taking on that planet. For the most part, you will want a ship that has a huge beam, armor, shield and power setting. Pack in as many fighters and torps as you can, (30 + hull size is good) and you can take on just about any planet. That is unless you do what I did, and try to take one of the WebMasters. Big mistake. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
I spent 5k turns setting up my ship, and attacked one of his planets in sector 499, and was defeated soundly. (Restart)

scanned webmasters. his ship alone would probably wipe out an entire fleet of star destroyers. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
i understand the scanning part but how does the game determine if a planet has a beam value of say 30 torpedo launcher 15 sheilds 10 etc. do we have the ability to upgrade bases like we do with ships?
also will ships and torps sitting on a planet deploy automatically when the planet is attacked? or do they need to be manually launched?
edit: when i asked about scanning i understand scanning other peoples planets and ships. but how do i find out what my planets capabilities are?

Bases can not be upgraded. They are static. They are designed to allow you to gain better control over your planet and system.
Yes, fighters and torps are launched automattically when your planet is attacked.
I think the amount of fightes released is directly equal to the amount of energy the planet has. SO DO NOT RUN LOW. And remember if you have your planet set to ALL TRADE, someone could buy all your energy then attack your planet.
I don't know about how to find out what our own planets are capitable of. I'll have to ask CNC.
You can also email the games creater and ask him. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif (His name is rick something I think. I beleive there is a link to his email on every page.)

I think the object of the game is to waste our lives away on the web. I can not really find any other reason to play it. Addictive like Planetarion, and Earth 2035, but more pathetic.
Oh I editted my post below too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

if you get tired of peacefully building your empire you always have mankinds other favorite pasttime, WAR. myself i prefer to peacefully build my empire. there are 3000 systems to explore, with 20 people playing the game thats 150 systems each times 5 planets per system gives us each 750 planets to rule. i want to see how many i can control before i go crazy from the amount of management necessary. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
so i would agree with atrocities reasoning for the game.

So... does it get any better than this? I mean, I haven't progressed very far really, but unless someone finds all my planets and wipes me out, there's nothing much to stop me (eventually) having stacks of 5 planet systems with impenetrable defences and hundreds of millions in the bank... what is there to do then? Or is this whole game just a cleverly devised lesson in the fundamental emptiness of an existence devoted entirely to the accumulation of material wealth?

Probably one of mine. I tried a strategy I found on another board- repeated kamakazing defenses- and uh, the Last time I forgot about the escape pod. Kersplat.

i just went to alliance planet list and the two planets i cant capture are part of the alliance i belong to. is it possible that one cannot capture planets that are corporate or part of the alliance one belongs to?
phoenix d these are probably your planets then.

A while back someone asked about planetary apocalyspe settings. If you look under the panetary menu you'll find a link to players log. Check it and you'll see where you've logged in and things that have happened to your planets. I've seen two bad events, space plague and plasma storm. One kills colonists and the other drains your energy.

Hey guys, I know what I am about to tell you will hurt, but I have no choice. I must shut the game down. I have received a message from the hosting company that says that I have exceeded storage capacity. I have spent the Last hour trying to find the problem, but cannot. To the best of my knowledge, all the files that are on the astmod.com web site total out to about 60 Megs. However, I cannot access the data base files in a way that will definitively prove that they are no more than 2.2 Megs in size. Therefore I must, with sincere regret, delete all the data base files in hopes that this is the culprit. I doubt it, but what else can I do. I am afraid that my web hosting company is scamming me, and I will no pay the charges. I have heard of this kind of thing happening before, and did not think that it would ever happened to me, but it apparently is happening. I will know more once I dump the cgi-bin.
Thanks for playing, and again, I am sorry.
