"Fleets can't have hundreds of ships, they can only have a handful.."
And he wants to use this for Se5? Let's hope he refines the engine some first! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Maybe SE5 combat will be like MOO3 combat... lots of ships, but only a handful of controllable units (Task Forces)?

From Malfador
you cannot have anywhere near as many as you did in SE4. Fleets can't have hundreds of ships, they can only have a handful.

That is no good.
Then on starfleet command2, it was a worthless pile of garbage. All ships were handled in 2D from a 3D point of view. Which means you can navigate north, south, east and west but you cannot move on the Y axe. It gave me a strange feeling of space battle in a bath tube. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif
I just hope starfury will be better (not hard) and that SE5 will be a bLast (??????)

I guess the whole real-time nonsense has already been decided for SEV. That's very sad. I guess now I have to say that Space Empires WAS the Last dynasty of turn-based strategy games. I wonder if there will ever be another?

SE5. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif It's going to be turn based according to everything Malfador has said up to this point.
Some of the graphics will be rendered in real time, which I guess is something totally different. It concerned me at first but I have been assured it's not the same as a real time game.
Also elements of the combat engine may be real time. It's not really clear what exactly that means, or even if it's a sure thing that it will happen for SEV. I suppose it's possible the game could be a turn based game that goes real time to resolve tactical combat. If you are a heavy solo player that that likes to play tactical combat in turn based that might be a disapointment. I play mainly simultaneous games with only strategic combat so I don't think I will see much diffence in that area.

Real time strategy on the scope of SEIV would be well nigh impossible with the number of ships and planets you have to manage (unless you get AI generals and governors...)

MP gaming as funny as it is sometimes is much overvalued.
It would be a big loss to the TB genre if the SEV tactical engine is real time. I am not quite sure if it is worth to buy it then (similar to MOO3).
Maybe somebody of MM or Shrapnel should make clear, if SEV has real time elements or not.

I think there has been a misunderstanding! I'm sure that SE:V will remain turn-based as will tactical combat, the whole real-time issue was that the graphics would be drawn real-time and not pre-rendered as with SE:IV! I'm sure the fleet size issues are just with SE: Star Fury because of the limitations of real-time games. Do not worry!

I hope you are right.

Umm... isn't Aaron planning on making combat real-time for SE5? That is what I have heard he is planning, at any rate. Turn-based combat really sucks, after all. It has tons of inherent flaws. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Well, anybody that says they know what Se5 will have is pretty much talking out their arse, myself included. Malfador is working on Starfury right now, some of which may be used for SE5. But how much and which parts is not clear at all. He is considering options for Se5, and taking suggestions, but as far as anyone but him knows for sure, the first line of code is yet to be written for it. We really don't know what it's going to have. He may not even know yet.

I wonder if fighters will be in Starfury - it would be nice, but all those polygons zipping around sucking up frame rates would be kinda killer, unless these thigns had very low poly models.

I hope fighters are in Starfury, imagine one of your freighters is really a Q-ship with fighters and heavy weapons. Come 'n get me Pirates! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
I also hope that storms, work like it did in Freespace 2.
