Let's say, all I want to do is design ships and let them fight in the simulator.
My perfect MOD then, would be the one that has the most gizmos for the ships, to choose from. In that case, what MOD would you folks sugges?

P&N and Devnull have a lot of gizmos. I think Proportions has gizmos, but not quite as many as Devnull or P&N. Of course, there is always Derek's Mod, which combines elements from all of those mods, but it hasn't been updated in a while.

Just a thought:
I'm guessing that the only downside to lots of cool gizmos is that the AI will build them but not use them or use them correctly.
Second thought: the AI for the mentioned mods has been adjusted or the games are mostly for non AI games.
I have a Short Range High Intensity external mount PDC that fires every other turn. It is meant as backup for the standard PDC. Unfortunately the AI puts it on their ships without standard PDC for backup.
PDC = Point Defense Cannon.

All of the mentioned mods have had the AIs adjusted to use the new gizmos when appropriate.

PDC = Point Defense Cannon.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">If you use "point defence" as AI flag then yes, AI will use only one type of PDC available. Which one - depends on number of tech. requirements. Try to use the "secondary weapon" field and put the PDC component group number. Or assign a phony ability to PDC and use it in design_creation file. Proportions uses this trick a lot, just take a look on Proportions' AI files.

I recommend playing simulator with Proportions, not because of the number of new gizmos (except maybe the number of armor variations), but because the changes are designed to try to make warship design and combat much more interesting, with balance between large and small ships, fighters and drones, with many design trade-offs between expense and thrift, shields vs. armor, etc.
