Tournament open now. There is a game on PBW where you can signup. I will assign you to your actual game from there.
This will be a double elimination tournament, open to all. The first two rounds will be games of five or six players each. Games will be seeded randomly. Games will be the following settings:
Starting resources: 100000
Starting planets: 1
Home planet value: Good
Score display: Own
Technology level: Low
Racial points: 2000
Quadrant type: Spiral Map
**Maps will be random, but with empires placed so that each player has decent space available.
Quadrant size: Medium
Event frequency: None
Event severity: N/A
Technology cost: Medium
Victory conditions: Last Man Standing
Maximum units: MAX
Maximum ships: MAX
Computer players: None
Computer difficulty: N/A
Computer player bonus: N/A
Neutral empires: No
Other game settings:
Surender disallowed
60 Hour, fully automatic turns
All players will play in the first two rounds. Players will face different opponents in the first and second round if possible. The format of the remaining rounds will be determined by the numebr of remaining players after the first two rounds.
Alliances and tech trading are permitted in game, but all games will be Last man standing. So keep that in mind when trading tech. It will be used against you at some point later in the game. Surrender is not permitted. If a player feels his position is untenable and wishes to withdraw he may do so. His place will be marked finished and the AI will control it to the end. Victor in any game will be the Last viable human empire remaining.

So I was thinking of kicking this into gear. We've got ten now and that's enough to start two first round games. We can keep taking people into the tourney as long as we want really. At least until we declare the first round over. In fact I could alter things a bit and have the first round games be first come first serve instead of random seeding. Round two would be shuffled to get people playing against new people as much as possible.
I still never thought up a good name for the tourney. Oh well...

Ok, I have made another change to the tourney. 36 hour turns are great for me, but the idea of the tourney is to make it accesible to as many people as possible, and some people just can't play that often. Instead of 36 hour turns I am changing it to 60 hour automatic turns. Two and a half days. It is my sincere hope that people will nto take the full 60 hours between turns. If you are in a game and you are the only one that hasn't played you can expect to receive emails from me wanting to know what is going on. And anybody missing turns with no explanation will be severly frowned upon. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Two first round games are full, one has already started playing. The third game needs one more player. I had hoped I would get at least 20 players for this, but if 15 is all we get we can make do.
Come on and join!

Ok, making progress now. We have 18. Three full games and looks like we should fill the fourth. I was looking at options for the later rounds and this would really work pretty well if we could get 25 people. But 20 is ok.
The nice thing about this one I think is it shouldn't take forever like the Survivor tourney. Might be able to do it in three rounds.

Ok Ruatha, you are in game 4. As long as people want in though I will keep adding games. I haven't put a time limit or a limit on the number of contestants. Although I'd like to keep the games all of five, at least for the first round. So maybe some people will not get in if we end up with only one or two extras. Unless we throw them in and make a couple games of six. Although that might be hard to do cause I have been starting the games as soon as they fill up so far.

Is premitted actually a word that means "not permitted"? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
Hypothetically speaking it's possible to restrict gifts and tributes of any kind, and it's possible to restrict technology gifts or trades. It's not possible to restrict trades involving ships, planets, or anything other than tech. But the question is moot for the purposes of this game because I am not restricting anything. Just keep in mind every game is Last man standing, no alliance victories. So anything you trade can and will be used against you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

No, I just meant the other-than-tech-trades because it is still thinkable to abuse the trade system to an advantage: 2 players are trading with the premise not to fight against each other until the other 3 players are gone, or similar scenarios.
I like the lonely-wolf-character of the setup. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

If you trade everything to your ally, then he will be able to use it against you at the end of the game. But knowing that if you still want to do it, you can. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Just so we are clear, you understand that all tech trading is allowed? I'm probably misunderstanding, but from your comments I couldn't tell if you got that.

Ok, we now have four games of five, twenty contestastants vying for the Open title. I have created a fifth game. If we can get 25 I would be pleased. If we can't get five more though I'll cancel that game at some point and we'll stick with the four games we have now.
If you haven't joined yet and you want to, you might want to try and get some of your friends or regular playing buddies to join too. Signups have kind of slowed to a tickle and I am not sure we'll get five more otherwise.

I am playing in the 2003 PBW Open Tournament, rd1gm7. I was just curious how the other games are going. We are up to turn 2410.3, one empire is dead, and the leading two empires’ alliance was sundered recently by large fleet actions in their mutual forward edge of the battle area. To my knowledge, the leading empires have been batting around the two remaining empires at will. The tech level is getting very advanced and each empire’s navy numbers in the hundreds. The real fight for supremacy has just begun… http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

Last person surrenders leaving me, well, the "Last Man Standing".
Though it may sound like the Oscars, I'd like to say I couldn't have won if it hadn't been for Mark Pash, who I established a partnership with soon after we met. And though I had little in return to offer, he traded a colonizing tech to me for me being a loyal partner and for what tech I had that he didn't have. I told him straight up that he was giving me more than he was getting. So, I owe my empire success to him.
