Well, after agonizing about MOO3 for a couple days I finally gave up on it. Meanwhile spurred by some Posts on the MOO3 Boards I investigated SE again and after playing the demo for several hours today decided to go for it. Wouldn't you know it, must be a buncha people went through the same thing because SE4 Gold went from "in stock" to "backordered" during the course of today. Bah! At least my order is in, hope the backorder doesn't take too long. Back to the demo I guess :-)

Yes, Atrocities may have made a lot of money for Shrapnel Games and Malfador Machinations. Or more properly, Quicksilver and Infogrames may have made a lot of money for Shrapnel Games and Malfador Machinations... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Atrocities was certainly not the first person to mention SE IV on those Boards. He's just the most aggressive advocate for it right now. The hard-core gaming community has been aware of SE IV for some time.
I wonder if we could get a report from someone about what sales have been like for the past few months and what they are doing right now.

Quicksilver and Infogrames are a great PR department for MM and Shrapnel. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Try www.cdmag.com (http://www.cdmag.com)
IIRC, Last night at least, they claimed to have SE4/gold "in stock" for about $25 (+S&H), while I was browsing in general.

In fact, the release of MOO3 was a commercial operation to increasing SE IV gold sales !
Atrocities, I hope you get benefits for your actions http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Good news! Back in stock at gamersfront.com and shipped already today! Yeah!
P.S. Pax, I checked, thanks...$25 +S&H pricing at cdmag.com is for SE4 (11/00 Version). For SE4 Gold it's $45 plus S&H so if you want Gold Shrapnel (which sends you to gamersfront.com) appears to be cheaper.

I did the same thing.
I was SOOO looking forward to MOO 3.
I was SOOO horrified at the monster it had become.
I really wanted to play a 4x game because I was SOOO looking foward to MOO 3.
My brain said, 'What about SEIV'.
I couldn't find the disk!
I remembered they had a new edition.
I shelled out the money.
So my copy of SEIV gold is on the way (I hope) and my copy of MOO 3 sits on top of my hard drive.
QS's disaster has prob sold about 50 copies of SEIVgold so far and I wouldn't be surprised if it really shoots up.
EDIT: Just checked, it shipped, woohoo!

Trust me when I say that there are many, many of us out there trying our damndest to draw more people to SEIV.

Worked on me.
I've been waiting nearly a year for MOO3 to be released. After the Civ3 debacle I decided to wait for user reviews before purchasing MOO3. After numerous bad reviews, I've decided not to buy the game.
I downloaded the SEIV demo yesterday.

If sales get really big, would Aaron bring out SEV sooner? Maybe contract more programmers?
SE5 is just such a long time away. Luckely we have SEIV to keep us company http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
I hope after Starfury is out, he'll announce the big changes in SE V.

I too, finally purchased SEIV due to the bad buzz around MoO3. I still intend to get MoO3, just waiting until the dust (and bodies) settle. It still has great potential and I can't give up yet.
That said SEIV already has the goods (I've been tinkering with the demo for months - just procrastinating in the purchaisng dept)

I hope after Starfury is out, he'll announce the big changes in SE V.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">In my humble opinion, if sales of SE:4 increase due to moo3's shortcommings, this would not necessecarily (I'm sure I spelled that wrong!) mean that SE:5 would come out faster, but it would make SE:5 a sure thing! (..and for your information SE:5 is already a sure thing. Aaron has confirmed that in a few interviews!)
Adding more programmers would not help the game get out faster, in fact in most cases it would extend the development time. The more people you have on a development team, the more time and effort has to be spent on coordination and syncronization of the people involved.
Nuf said! Cheers!

IMHO, I know everyone is looking foreward to SEV, however, lets not rush Aaron to push it out before its developed properly. When you rush a game, it ends up with all kinds of problems, and some end up worthless. So yes, I'm looking foreward to SEV, but lets let MM take their time and continue to put out an excellent game. In the meantime, we have SEIV and its mods to enjoy for now,
my 2 cents
just some ideas Mac
