View Full Version : REALLY slow ship movement on XP

On my WinXP supersystem (2.4ghz, 1gig ram, ti4600) animated ship movement is SLOW on the system maps, very very slow. God awful slow.

On my Laptop with Craptastic (tm) WinMe (600mhz, 256meg, ATI something or other) the ships move at a normal speed.

I like animated ship movement in the animated screen since it lets me keep track of whats moving where. If I set it to non-animated they just jump so keeping track is a pain with a big empire.

The rest of the game plays much faster as expected on a 2.4ghz vrs 600mhz system.

Any suggestions?

Try to remove any CD from your CD-ROM-Drive. This might help.

I've also noted a thing like that on my two PCs. Ships seem to move faster on my celeron 600Mhz than on my 800Mhz pentium III workstation (both running under windows 2k). That's quite strange.

It is an XP problem that has been there since gold was released. I don't know if it was ever resolved or not, you might want to do a search, there was a big thread about it when gold came out.

Would this be an issue only on the full Version or in both the demo and the full Version? I've been playing the demo (my full copy should arrive tommorrow), and so far everything seems to move fine on my XP system.

All Versions of the game have slow ship movement under XP. I have tried everything I can think of to fix this to no avail. Basically, I turn on movement lines and fast movement and live with it. If anyone does find a fix, please post it here.

I'm also using XP and have no problems.

I have a pretty good nVidia card, so maybe that helps (not like it gets much use http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif )

I haven't seen any problems on my laptop with XP...but I can't remember if I have ship move animation on or not...

My card is the top of the line nvidia 4600 128meg (at least it was top of the line a few months ago) so its not the card directly causing a problem.

Well this is annoying http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

EDIT: Ok I checked the old Posts. No CD music/Sound = no help. Looks like a lot of people have had a problem with this. All I can say is I'm bummed. Its not a game killer by any means, but its REALLY annoying.

Does this help any?

Edit: Long link that the board didn't like.

Is this an AMD machine? If so did you install the 4 in 1 drivers? Like one of the posters in that thread, i've found that NOT installing the 4 in 1 drivers results in better, more stable performance (XP only, VIA KT333 chipset). XP comes with its own VIA drivers.

I've got a Ti4600.

Edit: Seems like the board doesn't like that link.

Just goto Groups.google.com and search for "XP slow 2D graphics". I don't think this is the games fault.

Of course, you did go to the game options and turned off "animate ship movement in system window"?

If that doesn't work, you could upgrade your OS to Win98SE. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

I had animations ON for the good reason of knowing where all my fleets/ships are going, comming from etc.

Helps keeps you organized without memorizing everything.

I have two machines:

-p4 3GHz, ti4600, 1gig RAM running XP
-Athlon 1.2GHz, geForce3, 512mb RAM running Win2k

And ship movement is the same on both.

I have a dual-boot system with WinXP Pro and Win98. The ships definetly move faster under Win98 than under WinXP. It's a dual-boot system, so it's all the same hardware.

It's annoying more than anything, although I furrow my brow mightly when I play under Win98 and see the ships zipping across the screen... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif

I run se4 on two systems under XP. one is a high-spec 2.something desktop (work) and the other is a 1.4 Sony Vaio laptop (my own, my precioussss). On the laptop I've played se4 both before and after installing the 4 in 1 drivers.

Never noticed any irritating slownesses on either machine at any time.

You can try to use Win 98 compatibility mode. This is how to do it:
Make an icon of SE4 - right click on it - select properties - select compatibility - check "Run this program in compatibility mode for" box - select Win 98/Win ME - click apply.

It could solve the problem.
