This is my #1 most anticipated game of 2003, and there is no Forum???
Do I understand correctly:
1. Starfury is being created by the same guy who designed the #1 4x game of all time - SE4?
2. The combat system from Starfury will be used in SE5?
Will there be a forum? Demo? Has anyone sent information to the major gaming mags/sites??

My guess based on Malfador's previous procedures is there will be a demo and a forum. We might not see a forum until the demo is close to being available though since there won't be much to talk about.

Parts of the combat system of Starfury might be used in SE5, depending on how it goes. Starfury focuses on a few ships, whereas SE5 will have big fleets like SE4 does. So, the 3d rendering and such from Starfury would have to be toned down a lot if it is to be used in SE5.

But how much would have to be toned down? The biggest fleet action I've ever seen in SE4 was a couple dozen ships with a few hundred fighters. Assume that Starfury comes out this summer, patched and enhanced till next Spring, SE5 started spring 2004, released Summer 2005. By then, it wouldn't be too much to have minimum specs be around 1000 mhz, 32 mb 3D card, which should be able to handle a few dozen ships and a couple hundred fighters, no?

The largest combat I have seen was a couple dozen starbases, baseships, and then quite a few dreadnoughts and battleships numbering total on bothsides in excess of 100 with close to or more than 2000 fighters. Not to mention the satellites and planet based weapon platforms.

StarFury is expected to be out by this summer (2003) and SE5 is expected for Summer 2004. Aaron is more than capable to boil more than one pot at a time. For example, while coding Starfury he also works on the design aspect of SE5. When the coding for Strafury is completed he will be ready to jump right into the coding of SE5.
Think of it this way, Starfury is in the final stages of 'Production' (also known as the 'Beta' phase) SE5 is currently in 'Pre-Production' (known as the 'design' phase which includes both gameplay and visual design work!) When Starfury goes into 'Post-Production' SE5 will be ready to begin the 'Production' phase. (Note: A good Beta-test team can greatly reduce the amount of time required for the 'Post-Production' {patching} and therefore free Aaron to concentrate on SE5.)
I have every confidance in Aaron and the people that form his dev-team.
..just my 2 cents!

The biggest (and also the worst disaster) I have ever been a part of was when I sent 200 ships to assault an enemy (religious) planet.
My whole fleet got wiped out, except for the handful of support ships with "run away" orders, and the 10,000kt Battlemoon, which suffered heavy armor damage.
PS: David
Is Aaron going to actually have a dev team for planning/coding this time, or are you referring to the sounds & graphics guys such as yourself?

It sounds a lot like Freelancer (only more intriquing, cuz of the Space Empires universe). Well is it then... like Freelancer?
Also, two minor, but important questions..
1) I can tell from the "feature-list" that it is going to be "mod-able", but are there any limitations as to what we can do? It is certainly different from Space Empires. Will I be able to make my own starship in say Gmax and import it to Starfury?
2) Why do all the new replies pop at the beginning of a thread, instead of at the end? Can I change this? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

2) You can use the "printer- friendly Version", but once you get used to it, you will come to love this system http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif New replies are always right at the top where you can see 'em.
1) There will always be some sort of limit, but it should be moddable like SE4; shipsets, components, storyline, etc.

I was giving myself some covert praise! (a proverbial pat on the back!) I guess I should have 'cloaked' or 'camoflaged' but not both! Ah well, live and learn as they say.
