View Full Version : Patching SEIV - my 2nd fave activity

Applying patches to SE IV is my 2nd favorite activity.
I particularly love:
1) that the patch exe searches forever to find the original files and then finally asks you to find them even though the original was/is installed in the default folder.
2) no backward compatibility with saved games even though they haven't been started yet.
3) loses your original, custom settings
What's my first favorite activity you ask? Sleeping on nails!

I can't argue with one or three. They frustrate me as well. Escpecially one. But what do you mean by 2? How do you have a save game that isn't started? And being backward compatible anyway is uneccesary and would by definition limit the numebr of things that can be done in a patch. Who wants that?

My favorite moment is when it says that you can't update your exe. And you then need to reinstall the game!

Re #3, what custom settings are you talking about?
Aside from resetting path.txt, the patch dosen't affect mods at all.

All savegames have been compatible, i.e. you could use the old savegame files in the new Version. Always. Even from pre-Gold to Gold!

Simul move turns have to be processed with the new Version before you can play them with that Version though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

yes part three you should create a mod... so the custom settings are still there... Never play with the default data files...

Even fiddling with path.txt does no good.
The same has been true of custom emp files.
And what do I mean about 'game not started'? I mean by that a game that's not had a first move - just looked over map to check planets, et al.

When you try to load an older game, what error message do you get?

Did you change them without creating a separate mod folder? In this case installing the patch would overwrite your changes and produce the problems you describe.
