Can't say as I have. My trouble was playing pre-gold games after I installed Gold in a different directory. I kept getting all kinds of errors whenever I had to deal with my fleets so that basically screwed me into oblivion.
For anyone from Big Huge Political Game, Alpha Centauri, or Enormity, sorry guys. The Etaru shall rise again!

Run it in Windows 2000 compatibility mode by viewing the properties of the executable or the shortcut to it and selecting the Compatibility tab.

I had no problems with WinXP Pro and se4gold any patch. Got back to Win2k for other reasons though...

Been running Xp Pro with SE4 since I got SE4 and haven't had any problems.

Well, for those that do have problems, running the game in win2000 compatibility mode fixes those problems.
Not every install of an OS is the same. You do not always experience all of the common problems of an OS with your install of it. Just because you don't have problems running SE4 under XP does not mean that others can't have problems.

I'm going to try Fyron's idea.
It seems to run fine on my desktop but craps out on my laptop. Both have WinXP Pro but the LT is using an ATI video card and a different CPU and RAM (1 gig instead of 512 megs) - so the machines are different.
Running SEIV in CM as Win98/ME also failed.

Try not to run things in 95, 98 or ME compatibility mode. Win XP is Win 2000 with a facelift, a few other minor changes, and no DOS kernal. Nearly everything can run in 2000, so using 2000 compatibilty mode should work for everything except some really old DOS games, which you should try 95 mode for, as 95 is the most DOS-like OS you can pick.

All Versions of SEIV from demo mode on up - lockup on my laptop with the ATI 9000 video card. So the problem lies there it would seem.

In all compatibility modes? Hmm... you know what, there is some issue with network protocols on laptops with SE4 or something. Search for threads on them here.

I DL'ed a new one and all seems well now. We'll see.
On another note - this LT is a Dell 8200 and I'm not sure I'll buy another. Their tech support sucks of late. This is the second time I've had video driver problems with Dell products. On my 8100 - they never could solve the problem via phone and finally (after 1 year) agreed with me and accepted the unit back for a full refit. The chip was bad as I had been stating all along.
