I can go to the forum for a particular game directly from that game's description page without problem. It is trying to get to the general forums from the Community Page that is the problem. I do not have an non-standard security options enabled for Firefox.

Hey there, I'm having some tiny hiccups with the PBW server, no biggie, I sent my turns via email. When I try to send or recieve turns, I get a javascript dialog. It's probably just 'cause my isp is slow these days, thats been happening a lot lately. I felt like mentioning it because I hoped it had nothing to do with this {SANS report} (http://isc.sans.org/diary.php?date=2004-06-25)

We had it fixed, but when I restored the old code the other day it wiped it out. Ok, I am going out of town for a week and a half. While I am gone the PBW server will remain operational, hopefully. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Georgig and Tesco have access to the server remotely and can do a lot to recover if there is a problem that's not to serious. However, there is the posibility of an ISP or power problem or some kind of hardware issue that they will not be able to do anything about. If something like that happens unfortunatly it's going to have to wait till I return on the 14th.

I have turned off the PBW auto-processing in case there is a problem. Turns will run if all are uploaded, and the game owner or a PBW admin can force the turn to run as well. But turns will not run simply because the time limit has been reached.

If you need to reach them send an email to admin@pbw.cc. I will NOT be checking email while I'm gone.

Good luck. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

No problem on the server. Are you using Explorer or something else. Perhaps it's some sort of browser problem. Maybe you have your sercurity set to block the javascript stuff? I'm just guessing here. Did you try the text UI or graphic or both?

I clicked the accept for you so Tnarg is in the game now. If it happens again we can try testing a bit more and narrow down what's causing it for you specifically.

Problems like this generally arise from not using Internet Exploder, which PBW was designed for. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Even when disabling all security settings, I have never been able to get the Accept/Kick/Finish buttons to work in Mozilla Firefox. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Probably shouldn't discuss this further in this thread, so as not to clutter it up. Just posting confirmation that this is an on-going issue...

Sounds like your . . . thing with which you tried to connect has trouble interpreting the specifics of a rejection.

Everything is loading perfectly fine for me here.

No problems here too. I guess it is a bad connection.

Alneyan
September 2nd, 2004, 02:37 PM
I thought so. Does PBW use any kind of special port? There has been no changes to software, so the problem doesn't come from there. However, the router might have come alive again, and my ISP is no longer the same (my ISP is Cegetel, in case a "wide" ban has been set up over this domain).

Roanon
September 2nd, 2004, 03:37 PM
Do you use seiv.pbw.cc or are your trying to access by IP adress, maybe using an outdated one? If you try to access the graphic Version, does the text Version work probably?

Alneyan
September 2nd, 2004, 03:46 PM
I use seiv.pbw.cc. Using the IP does not work either. I am using the text Version, and cannot access the graphical Version.

Pinging PBW brings a timeout as well, whereas pinging another site works fine (with a response time under 200 ms).

Roanon
September 2nd, 2004, 05:35 PM
Veeeerrrryyyy strange. Pinging should work for sure. Maybe your ISP does not like .cc? Can you reach www.enic.cc (http://www.enic.cc)? You didn't try www.seiv.pbw.cc (http://www.seiv.pbw.cc) by accident, or your browser tried to "help" by inserting www.?

Alneyan
September 2nd, 2004, 06:14 PM
The URL is correct, and there was no www inserted (either by mistake or because of a "friendly" browser). The link you gave has the same symptom as PBW; however, www.trillian.cc (http://www.trillian.cc) works fine. Trillian may be hosted on another "physical" domain though.

In both cases, Firefox manages to connect and tells me to wait while it waits for the server. The page is then loaded for ten minutes or so, before Firefox stops without giving any kind of error message.

I guess it is something about my ISP and this domain; hopefully a temporary glitch rather than a more annoying problem.

geoschmo
September 2nd, 2004, 09:18 PM
Alneayn, have you tried it with anowther browser? Do you have IE on that computer? Have you tried the text as well as the graphic UI? It may be a browser issue instead of any kind of ISP thing.

geoschmo
September 2nd, 2004, 09:25 PM
Ok, auto turns are back on.

Alneyan
September 3rd, 2004, 05:07 AM
My browser did not change, and worked fine under both my previous DSL ISP, and my backup modem. IE does not work either , and Navigator results in the same problem as my trusted Firefox. I do not have any direct link to the graphic Version, and so cannot try this one (I use the text-based Version).

Interestingly, removing my cookies enabled me to get an error message when attempting to reach my game list (logically enough; but PBW worked there). Likewise, the other computer (that has never been touched by PBW), connects to PBW without a glitch.

How are you supposed to send your turn by email? I have tried just attaching the plr file to the mail as a reply, but it doesn't seem to work. Or has this feature been the cause for PBW downfalls, and is disabled because of this?

Ruatha
September 3rd, 2004, 07:00 AM
The send mail function has been disable a loong time, have you tried using the SE4 Companion?

Alneyan
September 3rd, 2004, 07:46 AM
The Companion does not seem to be able to connect to PBW either (the programme hangs up while attempting to connect to PBW).

Other possible problems: I am using Windows XP (*Sigh*), but its firewall has been disabled, destroyed, slaughtered, desactivated, and finally beaten to death before being totemised. No other firewall is present on the host computer. All services for my shared connection are also enabled, as XP is known to be a jester and randomly disables these useless things (such as HTTP or mail; who needs these?) when it strikes its fancy.

Edit: Now it works! I do not know why, but it works! *Rushes to upload some turns*

September 10th, 2004, 06:26 PM
Since I am not sure if Roanon will be able to respond to this thread before leaving, I will answer your more general Queries.

The game in question is NGC4, currently hosted by Tesco (the previous host was Ruatha, but will be away in the weeks to come). I do not know how long he will be gone however, and so cannot say how long ALPU would be needed (if it is needed).

Roanon
September 10th, 2004, 06:36 PM
I'll be unavailable tomorrow noon, i.e. about 12 hours from now, on vaccation for 2 weeks, will be able to organize internet access there but not before tuesday if all goes well, wednesday if it doesn't work as expected. Would be great if I could sumit at least an emergency turn before leaving, otherwise I'll have to ask tesco for ALPU (and hope he will grant it), or miss the turn that will be due tuesday.

geoschmo
September 10th, 2004, 08:06 PM
Ok, server is up. I'm gonna watch things for a few minutes and makes sure everything is working right.

Roanon, I understand what's going on, the problem is with auto turns off there won't be a turn for you to play anytime soon, but if you are already gone when auto turns are back on you'll miss the next turn.

I will touch base with Tesco before I turn auto turns back on. What's the latest you could be available to do a turn tonight or tommorow? Either he'd need to run a turn manually for that, I'd need to turn auto turns back on before you go, or possibly he could put your game on ALPU.

Or I could do a turn or two for you if you need a temporary replacment player.

Geoschmo

Roanon
September 10th, 2004, 08:27 PM
I'll be gone in about 11 hours. Problem with manual processing is that for fairness reasons, opportunity to submit a turn should be given to the 4 still missing players, who could have tried submitting the turn in the Last 6 mins remaining before deadline when the server was switched off. At least Hippocrates was interrupted in the middle of uploading, as already posted. Really bad bad timing - just 10 mins later and everything would have been fine. Bad luck.

NGC is a 20 player game with roughly 250 systems, about half of the players remaining and I own my share of the map plus 1 or 2 systems. Really not the game for a replacement player, he would need hours just to find through.

I guess the turn will be run manually a few seconds after I will have left, counting on my bad luck. If I can't download a copy before leaving so I can do an emergency turn on the weekend and try to get a turn or email into pbw somehow on monday, I will have no chance. I'll email Tesco depending on what will have happend before I leave, switching the game to ALPU for next turn might be an option that could save me.

Too bad, it was planned ahead to work with optimal timimg, now it has turned into maximum disaster timing just because of 6 minutes...

No, it's not this turn he's concerned about. It's the next turn after this one runs. It would have already run and he could have done his next turn, except for me taking the server down this afternoon, and turning off auto turns when I brought it back up.

Thanks for waiting everyone! I tried to upload for NGC4 during the Last six minutes before deadline and of course the server was down. I'm very glad you didn't run the turn without me!

Also, I think that we should not play without Roanon as he is a vital player and very commited to this game in general. It doesn't seem right to mess up his plans due to a weird outage like this.

As suspected, I have to leave now and cannot even grab the latest results, as the turn still has not run. This means I will not be able to do anything for NGC4 for a few days. Have sent an email to Tesco, I hope he will let me catch up - I need to do at least an emergency turn with a few adjustments, I haven't prepared for this disaster as I couldn't foresee this.

Maintenance downtime seems to become more frequent now - how about a regular schedule, Geo? This way, everything would be less turbulent, autoturns could be switched back a few hours after downtime if it is announced like 24 hours ago, I think.

Unfortunatly scheduling downtime is difficult for me. I don't always know in advance when I will have time to do what I have to do. On the bright side most of the recent downtime has been leading up to what I was finally able to accomplish yesterday. The primary server is offline and we are running on the backup server. I will be shipping the primary to Tesco now and the only scheduled downtime in the foreseeable future will be when we bring the primary back Online and get it up to date. That probably won't be for a couple weeks. I'll try to give you more advanced warning though.

Edit: Yes, it does work, and simply takes a bit more time. So please disregard my message above. However, I would like if someone could nag me when pressing matters are brought up in the NGC5 forum. If needed, I will also have to figure out a way of accessing Game Admin options while PBW is unavailable for me.

Your turn was received and processed. The turn ran sucsesfully about five minutes ago.

You should receive a confirmation email from PBW every time you send in a turn that way, either a "turn processed" or "turn did not process" email. So even if the turn doesn't run right away you should be able to tell that your turn was received. Although it probably takes a few minutes to work through the system and back to your email box.

EDIT: And now I see you edited your post to say that you figured that out already. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Geo can I get you to upload and install the Star Trek Mod Version 1.9.0.1?

There is a data only file that contains no BMP images and has only the data files, all of them, for the mod.

direct download link is = www.astmod.com/zips/stm/STM1901Data.zip (http://www.astmod.com/zips/stm/STM1901Data.zip)

Does it have the AI files too? You don't want _only_ data...

The full Version 1.9.0.0 is the full mod BMP images and all
The Data files only is just that, data files, AI files, no bmp images. It is the complete mod without the bmp images.

If it's not down yet, it could be soon. Kick it. It's doing wierd stuff like showing "turn due" when they're uploaded and vice-versa.

It could be interesting for game owners:

It's possible to submit nonexistent file instead of plr file. The new turn will be generated, but game will fail to open it, and then you quit, it'll show you "Access violation at address..." error message.
Example: in the Upload Your Turn page I pasted a string with a wrong path to the plr file into the textfield. Server accepted it (bad!) as a 0 byte file, and made incorrect turn file.

Just in case you'll have such problems in the future, you know there to find now.

Also, since you're changing the forum -- the "game forum" option cuts off the right side of the frame by an inch. Plus, I kind of liked the color-coded scheme that told me which games had their files uploaded already... now I have to squint at text and read.

My suggestion would be a big red/green light at the top of the window, customizable, that would turn on or off depending on whether or not you needed to upload files. Also, I would like to be able to download all turn files from all games at once in uncompressed format, so I don't have to bother going through a dozen winzip windows everytime I want to play and don't have to click on every one of my games.

<edit> Strange I go back and the pbw doesn't have that new look that it had in the internet cafe. I must have clicked text based PBW </edit>

ISP has been having some hiccups the Last few weeks. Nothing serious, just goes offline for a few minutes to an hour every few days. The only reason I'm concerned at all is because prior to this we've had no problems at all since we switched to the cable form the DSL. Hopefully it's just temporary and not a sign of things to come. Anyway, that's the reason for the Last few incidents. Server has been running fine.

Brian, yah, we haven't made any changes recently and have no immediete plans to make forum changes. Probably you are right and you just clicked on the text UI.

I'm having some difficulty with PBW. I just uploaded a turn, and then tried to enter another page on the PBW site....and nothing happened. There was no error message or anything, but it would not give me access to anything. It just sat there, doing nothing. I've tried both the text and graphic sites, but they both give me the same thing. They're all still dated 11:30 on Tuesday, too...

... I wonder if PBW sent a million of them at once to some poor mail server that is dutifully sending them all out one at a time, even though PBW might have stopped sending them. Or does PBW set the time-stamp on turn files artificially to the time the turn was generated?

PvK
