Loser,
For my style of Play I use Colony Ship Hulls if:
I don't have DD or LC yet because grphicaly it easier for me to pick it out on the screen
I don't need the extra storage space for:
Population - Usualy a good idea to start with as many as possible. The exception would be if the colony is likely to be attacked. Also don't send more pop or Units than will fit on the planet.
Weapons - To protect a new colony on the fringe of the Empire
Supplys - IF I'm going to Send it "Out there someplace"

One tatctic I use is to create a colony with only 1 Million, (the smallest possible), colonist and as many Weapons platforms as possible in hopes the AI will try to take or glass it. I doubt humans fall for this.

PvK<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yup, if my memory serves me correctly then the AI will "scan" your planets and decide if it thinks it can win the battle; if it doesn't then it will move on to the next target.

I've heard that too. I wonder if it is affected by an AI setting. I can remember a couple of AI that tryed to glass heavily defended planets.
