good idea, as long as no DLL's are not installed in the Windows directory (or other files), I will have to check later. But those USB flash drives are so cheap now, they are great, I dont use floppies any more, heck the Last 2 systems I built, I did not install a floppy drive *shrug*.

If SEIV checks the registry for a path you might have to bring a REG file a long to update it.
(just guessing)

SE4 will not be able to load the fonts properly if you try to run it from a folder it was not installed to. Well, more accurately, SE4 tries to load the fonts from the fonts subfolder of whatever folder SE4 was installed in Last. If SE4 was never installed on the computer, the game won't be able to find it's font files. I do not know if it would work with a USB drive, but I suspect it places something in the registry to tell it where to look.

Which means that as long as you have it in the same spot, you're fine should be fine. (i.e. all the computers see the USB drive as the same letter)

I zip my entire SE4 installation to back it up, and only very rarely do I have to reach for the disk.

So I should be able to do this IF I run the install to install it to the (say "F") drive then I should be able to take it with me (evil grin) I can see SE4 on the work system http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

well try it out and see what happens... Then post your results.

it should work fine... i KNOW SE4 does not require any reg files to run... dont know if there are any, but i know it doesnt REQUIRE them...

the patch doesn't even check the registery, so there probably aren't any...

1, get a computer that runs on something other than 95
2, get a USB drive (was thinking about this)

If your going to try it on a comp at work (or anywhere), plug in your USB drive and see what drive letter it assigns to the device, then at home make sure that the same drive letter is used when you connect to the USB drive. Depending on OS you should be able to set something like "Always use *drive letter* for this device".

The only reason I bring this up, many comps have different HDs/partitions that mess up drive letter assignments. Ohh, and I wouldnt just use the drive letter Z: since that is usually assigned for network paths to home folders in MSFT type networks (not allways, but it is what I have seen).

Oh, and I have seen some great prices on USB pin drives at Tiger Direct, I paid $45 (us) for 128 meg somewhere else, and you can get 256 meg for about that same price. Just amazaing that something the size of your thumb can hold so much data and no moving parts.

I used to have two pc's networked together and SE4 loaded on one. I could run se4 from a the other pc usign a shortcut and a mapped drive. I think if it works for taht it should work for USB. Although I don't know that much about USB.

You don't need to have a reg file, but you may want one.
The HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Malfador Machinations\Space Empires IV stores your locate settings, such as the 'File, Options' settings.
Same Reg location for both Version of SE IV.
