I always use this feature in big maps... and really consider it a "must be" feature to avoid micromanagement in big games.

I usually set 3 or 4 way points on my main military type planets that are at the front so that when a new ship gets built at the rear I can just order in to waypoint 1. Saves a bit of clicking. Depending on the situation I may set the planet move to order to go to the way point.

Probably bad play on my part but I tried using them and determined (after so many deviations from those "assigned" waypoints) that it didn't help much to use them.
Many factors are involved for me when moving ships...what I guess some might call, "Management by Crisis"... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

an extremly useful option, waypoints are. its a shame to NOT be using them.

I use them when i have a specific spaceyard creating ships for a specific warp point, but other than that i don't really use them that much

I can't answer, because my answer woudl be "sometimes, when it is strategically advantageous".
Map size has nothing to do with it; number of shipyards building a given ship, does. Wether or not it's a peacetime build, and I have somewhere with multiple trainng facilities in the same sector, does (planet with 2 moons = triple train rates, in vanilla SE4).

micromanagement good, waypoints bad
now all I need is a bunch of sheep repeating it for hours... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Why are waypoints bad? You can gather your new ships at the nearest training planet with just 2 button presses instead of several mouse clicks, then some buttons, and more clicks.

I also use them, MB http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Great for refueling stops along the way thru many systems to the frontier, System Fleet Headquarters’ that has large ship facilities that include training, repair etc. Frontier WP defense rendezvous…
This is defiantly a great tool to have in the game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

This is the main use for me... and then, I don't need to control every message like "the ship Xxxx has been built at Rove".

So why did you make this poll exactly?

So why didn't you say that to Narf's poll?

What does that have to do with anything? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif

You're asking what the point is on a poll with a point, but not on one without one. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Like JLS, I find them extremely useful for fleet assembly points. I usually have all my space yards set up to automatically send newly built ships to one of my waypoint planets, which usually has a resupply depot, a ship training facility, and a fleet training facility. It really saves a lot of time.

I usually have 2 waypoints, something along the lines of "Homeworld" and "Forward Military Base"... you can see I don't like to fight multi-front wars http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Especially when you create new fronts in several point in enemy space at once with WP openers. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

MB, there is one thing, that has just happened to a ship on Auto Pilot to the next Way Point. It was canceled by AI intel and ended up Systems away before I noticed it… http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif
But I still will always, use it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Not a game goes by where I don't have a few waypoints throughout my empire. I don't know if I can play this game without using them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Well, I apparently do happen to enjoy micromanagement - at least, the sort of micromanagement present in SEIV.

hmm my post went missing from 2 days ago
I enjoy way points as well.
I max out the 10 quite early in a game.
I use them for dropping off units,
Loading population
Fleet concentrations
Picking up units
Etc...
