View Full Version : POLL: Ratings (and how you do them)

I once said to someone (forget who... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif ) that I was only an average player. Not one to garner the envy of players all over the world. So, to leave my name embedded in the "hearts" of others... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif , I would become Poll Boy.
So, here I am again...you either love me or hate me...LOL.
BUT...
(or SO...)
This poll deals with Ratings. Do you rate people? Why do you rate people? Why do you give them good Ratings and why do you give them bad Ratings?
As always, opinions appreciated.

Some slightly interesting results coming out. More votes would be good. I think everyone would like to know what people think when they think about rating someone.

Ok, well here is what I voted on the poll.
I of course selected yes on the first option. Then the second I selected the following:
They display good sportsmanship.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I will rate someone high if they have good sportsmanship. Particularly in the KOTH thread. With so many games and how you cannot be on the hill without losing a few times (something I know all too well) you have to have good sportsmanship. Otherwise you're a drag to play against. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
They post helpful tips about game-playing in the forum.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">This is also something I look for when rating someone. If they truely help this community become stronger by their support and helpful tips then they will get a high rating from me.
They just seem like people you'd like to know.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">This is something I look for as well but not requited to meet before I rate someone. Alot of the folks around here I would love to meet in person just because I think I'd get along great with them and have a good time.
Then I selected the Last option that you have to meet at least 2 of the above to be rated. There you have it, now you know what I look for before I rate someone, Poll Boy. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Yes, it's weird, but I sometimes long to sit in a bar (or a room showing Firefly reruns) with some of the people I have "met" here. Just too bad that the game (itself) doesn't generate a "happening" like that. It would be nice to meet at someone's house (like mine, where there are 4 PC's and a network) to have some fun and watch the pros go at it LIVE.
Yes, like you said, "seeing" people and then wanting to meet them. Geo ranks high there.

(1 for each member of the family) and then in the basement we have the network all running through the server. (5th computer) I could easily add 2 or 3 more computers onto the network as all it would take is to plug them in and set up the network settings. I have 2 computers sitting behind me that are just sitting there unplugged and everything. Then 2 servers that are here while we set them up for my dads work. Lots of computers I'd say. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

You forgot the "I give everyone a 5 to throw off the curve" option. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

I have given out several 5-star Ratings to people who contributed significantly to the community, with mods, stories, shipsets, forum avatars, the FAQ, or by generally being helpful when I have a question.
I have given out two one-star Ratings to flamers. The only two such people I saw here.
I gave a two-star rating to a person who is not a flamer but habitually uses offensive language.
That being said, I know there are still many people out there whom I should rate at 5 stars, please be patient and I'll get around to it.

I've rated quite a few people. Mainly if they release a nice shipset, a great story or be generally helpful to people. Then theres the exception of them being generally nice guys in the bar trek thread. I don't really give anything less than a 5 star rating, unless someone starts flaming someone.

I don't rate people for 2 reasons:
1. I'd only bother if I were going to give them a 5, or (maybe) a 1, anyway...
2. I don't know how to take it back... what if Suicide Junkie flies off the handle and becomes a homicide junkie? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif Or what if a flamer I rated a 1 months ago has reformed and become an upstanding member of the community?

Lately I just mostly rate people that are always posting nuisance polls in the forum. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I don't rate people but like dbt1949 said, the poll won't let me post that.

Yes, it would. But there is a distance problem. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
I suppose it could be done on a regional basis, though.

I just did a test (which involved giving Geo 5 stars, which he deserves). There is no way, or at least no easy way, to change or remove a rating once you've given it.
I think I'll be more careful in the future with the low Ratings (not that I haven't been up to now, but I'll be more careful).

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Correct, once you rate someone that is it. It cannot be taken back or changed in any way that I know of.
