as it popped up, breifly, on se4. in a sort of stars! mod? no the game way.
stars! style research, with only 6-10 research paths. each path would give a different type of bonus, so empire diversity would be in wether you had fast ships or strong weapons.

a good idea

but can be exploited and abused dont you think? the winning strategy would be to get big research ASAP and go to the tree most opposed to yours.

no, things like construction, biology, propulsion, weapons. so, research would be very general.

so what would prevent one from having the strongest, fastest, biggest ships?
(sorry i didnt play Stars! so if im realy missing the point tell me now)

well, if you researched say eight levels in construction when everybody else only had five, that would leave you less for weapons. or electronics or whatever. i don't know if you missing the point. um, what do you think the point is?

isnt it the same in SE right now? if you went straight up for DN's you'd have them way before everyone else - but then remember the Eee, who have DN's running around with shields I, sensors I, ECM I and APB I.

well, yeah. escept research would be a lot more general with only 6-10 techs. i imagine mostly people who like stars would play it. we could even give the techs and stars funny names like wammalammadingdong.

Taera, it sounds like basically what Narf is suggesting is you condense the tech tree into a small number of general areas - so instead of researching "Missile Weapons", "Point Defense Weapons", "Torpedo Weapons", "High Energy Discharge Weapons", etc., you just research "Weapons". Why you'd want to do that, I don't know, it just seems like it cuts down on the strategic possibilities for empires with different strategies coming in contact - remember SE2, where there was only one "tech area" - and it was insanely cheap to research? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

The only reason that old games did that is because it was a part of measures to minimize the system resources need to play the game.
