View Full Version : why can't you trade specific techs?

I've started fooling around with offering tech as gifts and for trade. But the reason I don't like it is there doesn't appear to be a way to give specific levels of tech--you have to give the entire area.
So, for example, you can't give explosive warheads II--you have to give the whole thing. This is even worse when you're talking about research areas--say, construction. Here you're obliged to give up an entire area of tech that allows other tech under it.
So I think the trading of specific techs, by level, should be put into the game if possible.

Each time you trade a tech it only trades one level of that tech. Trading "Warheads" for example will trade one level of Warheads. In order to trade warheads 2 you have to trade Warheads, Warheads.

Actually, giving them 1 level of Warheads increases their level in Warheads by 1, up to the max of what you have. So, if they have Warheads 1, giving them one level in Warheads will give them Warheads 2 (assuming you have 2). Giving them 2 levels brings them up to Warheads 3 (assuming you have 3).

There is a way to give a specific tech. Give them a ship with the component on it. Then when they analyze the ship at a shipyard, they can only get tech levels that are on the ship. This is not a very cost effective method of trading. You can loan them an orbital shipyard so they can analyze the ship immediately at your base. You can even build a no engine ship to accomplish this feat.
I am not sure if you can pass on tech using facilities and planets.

But there isn't a deconstruct and analyze function for facilities.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah, I don't think this actually does what you think it does. I am pretty sure that analyzing tech acts just the same as trading it. For example if you gift a ship with a level 5 PDC on it, the player only gets one level of PDC, not level 5 in PDC. I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure about that. I believe they get one level of the tech per component on the ship.

I though it was much the same as tech trading. ie if you reasearch a ship with one DUC 5 and you only have DUC 1 you go up one level

You get one level for each unique component on the ship. So, you can give them a ship with one DUC IV and one DUC V, and they can get two tech levels in Projectile Weapons.

For example, if you have level 5, but want to give level 3, you use a level 3 Version of the component. In a diplomatic trade, if you offer one level to someone who has level 4, but claims level 2, you give them level 5 instead of level 3. My solution was to limit the level given. To give multiple levels, just give the same tech multiple times in diplomacy. I know that works as I have done it many times.

Yeah, it works, as Fryon described. They won't get a higher tech than your example has.
